Ephrem the Syrian (died c. 373)

Ephrem the Syrian; his innovations transformed religious services.

Ephrem the Syrian was not really a Syrian. A famous hymnwriter and Bible teacher, he was born in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, and lived most of his life in Edessa which is in modern Turkey.

Good parents gave him a jump start on faith. They trained him to fear the Lord and both suffered for their faith. He later wrote, “I was born in the way of truth; and though my boyhood did not understood the greatness of the benefit, I knew it when trial came.”

In 337 after Constantine the Great died, Sapor, king of Persia, seized the opportunity to invade Mesopotamia. He besieged the city of Nisibis where Ephrem was staying, and in 70 days brought it to the verge of surrender. But Ephrem talked the city’s old Bishop James into mounting the walls to pray for the Divine help. Soon afterward, swarms of mosquitoes and horse-flies made Sapor’s horses and elephants unmanageable, and the king withdrew his forces. After that, Ephrem moved to Edessa.

Untrained in any skill and without any other means of making a living, Ephrem became a bath-keeper. In his spare time he was a missionary, teaching and reasoning with the natives. An old monk overheard him witnessing, told him that it was wrong for him to mix with the world, and convinced him to live in a cave, starve himself and study Scripture. Ephrem began writing books, disciples gathered to learn from him and went home to teach others.

After some time, Ephrem visited Basil, the famous Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia.It was January, but Ephrem spent the night in the cold street. The next morning he took his place in a corner of Basil’s church, and Ephrem groaned in spirit as he saw Basil seated in a magnificent pulpit, arrayed in shining garments, with a mitre sparkling with jewels on his head. “Alas!” he said to his interpreter, “I fear our labor is in vain. For if we, who have given up the world, have advanced so little in holiness, what spiritual gifts can we expect to find in one surrounded by so great pomp and glory?” But when Basil began to preach, Ephrem was impressed by the power of the holy Spirit in his words. The two became fast friends.

Ephrem learned that Edessa was assailed by numerous heresies and hurried home. On reaching Edessa, he found that gnostics had created 150 popular songs to teach their false doctrines. Even children knew them by heart. To combat their influence, he composed numerous hymns himself, and trained young women to sing them in chorus. The subjects of these hymns were the Life of our Lord, including His Nativity, Baptism, Fasting, and the chief incidents of his ministry, His Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension. He wrote also on Repentance, on the Dead, and on Martyrs. The whole city flocked to hear these songs, and the gnostics lost their influence.

Basil tried to persuade Ephrem to visit Caesarea again, intending to make him a bishop, but Ephrem was so sure he was not meant to be a bishop that he even pretended to be insane in order to escape Basil’s plan.

After this Julian the Apostate became emperor. He hated Christianity and ordered the people of Edessa to send chosen citizens to pay him homage, and to join him in his restoration of the old pagan cults. The people of Edessa would have nothing to do with this plan and the emperor was not able to do anything about it at the time. By one means or another, Ephrem continued to defeat other false teachers. He even glued together the pages of one teacher’s book so he couldn’t read aloud in public debate.

Ephrem went back to his cave. He did not remain there, however. Edessa suffered a severe famine and Ephrem left his cave, came to the city, and convinced the richer citizens to bring out their secret stores of food. Ephrem himself took charge and distributed the food with such skill, prudence, and honesty that it fed the Edessenes and numerous strangers until the following year’s bumper crop.

His died soon after this, around AD 373. Before his death, he commanded his disciples not to bury him beneath the altar, nor in a church, nor amongst the martyrs, but in the common burying-ground of strangers, in his gown and cowl, with no spices or waxlights, but with their prayers.

In addition to his hymns, Ephremm wrote many books, and a commentary on the Old Testament. He knew how to make his writings touch people’s lives. Prayers that he composed are found in most Oriental liturgies. He spent his whole life in poverty, raggedness, humility, and gentleness. “Throughout my whole life, neither by night nor day, have I reviled any one, nor striven with any one; but in their assemblies I have disputed with those who deny the faith. For if a wolf is entering the fold, and the dog goes not out and bark, the master beats the dog. But a wise man hates no one, or if he hates at all, he hates only a fool.”

Because he taught the things of Christ with “spirit and taste, and his poetical gifts were exactly those calculated to give weight and influence to his authority as a teacher among his countrymen,” they honored him, giving him the title of Malphono, “the teacher.” But his greatest service to the church was the marvellous variety and richness which he gave to public worship.

القدّيس أفرام السّريانيّ شهدوا له

كثيرون من القدامى تحدّثوا عن البار أفرام أو امتدحوه. أبرز هؤلاء القدّسغريغوريوس النّيصصيّ في مديحته الخاصة به. باسيليوس الكبير شهد له وكذلك الذهبيّ الفم.بلاديوس وثيودوريتوس وسوزومينوس امتدحوه. فوتيوس الكبير اعتبره معلّم المسكونة الإلهيّوالقدّيس سمعان المترجم كتب سيرة حياته. غريغوريوس النّيصصيّ أسماه "القدّيس أفرام"ولقبّه بـ"فرات الكنيسة الرّوحيّ" ودعاه "أبانا العظيم" و"قدّيسناالمشهور" و"النّبيّ الفائق" و"المعلّم أفرام"، تجرّأ فجعلهبجانب "أعظم المولدين في النّساء" و"وسيط عهد النّاموس والنّعمة".

معلوماتنا بشأنه نستقيها، بصورة أساسيّة، من مؤلّفاته ومن كلّ ما قيلعنه، لا سيما من مديحة النّيصصيّ.

أوائله

المعلومات الموثوقة عن حياته محدودة. اسمه معناه "الخصب". ولدفي نصيبين على ضفاف نهر دجلة، أو ربما في جوارها، لعائلة فقيرة حوالي السّنة 303 مزمن الأمبراطور ذيوكليسيانوس قيصر. أكثر من مقال ورد في شأن والديه. قيل إنّهما كاناتقيّين ومعترفين بالمسيح، وقيل كانا من نسل الشهداء، وقيل أيضًا بل كان أبوه كاهنًاوثنيًا. فلما مال الصّبيّ إلى المسيحيّة طرده أبوه من المنزل العائليّ فلجأ إلى يعقوب،أسقف نصيبين، الّذي أنشأه على محبّة الفضيلة والتأمّل في الكتاب المقدّس.

جهالاته

يُستدل من اعترافات القدّيس أنّه سلك في شبابه نظير أقرانه. لم يكن يطمعفي القداسة ولا كان له مثل يحتذي به. همّه كان أن يعمل ويأكل من عرق جبينه وأن يكونله صيت حسن بين النّاس. كان يباهي بأنّه من الشباب المفكّر ويجاهر برأيه في العنايةالإلهيّة أنّ لا شأن لها في تدبير الكون، وكلّ ما يحدث لا يتعدّى كونه وليد الإتفاقوناتج الأقدار الطبيعيّة.

ولكن، حدث له، بتدبير الله، ما سفّه رأيه وفتح عينيّ قلبه على طرق القداسةوخدمة القريب.

فلقد طارد يومًا بقرة أحد المساكين لأنّها دخلت حقله، ففرّت من أمامهفتبعها، فدخلت في الوعر، وقيل افترستها الوحوش. ونام أفرام عن البقرة ولم يعوّض علىصاحبها، ولا اعتبر نفسه مذنبًا بشأنها. ولمّا يمضِ شهر على ذلك حتّى جرى القبض عليهمتّهمًا بسرقة قطيع أضاعه الأجير المكلّف به الّذي اتفق مرور أفرام بموضعه ساعة وصولالشُرط إليه. فألقي في السّجن ريثما تجري محاكمته. هناك التقى عددًا من المساجين كلّهممتّهم بما لم تقترفه يداه. وإذ شعر بضيق عظيم لأنّه ألفى نفسه والمساجين الآخرين متّهمينظلمًا بما هم منه براء، بات على وشك إصدار حكم على الله أنّه لا عدالة في الأرض تُرتجىوالأمور تجري اتفاقًا ولا علاقة لله بها. وغفا متكدّرًا. فجاءه في الحلم صوت يقول له:إذا كنتَ بريئًا من هذا الجرم، يا أفرام، أفأنت بريء من غيره من الذنوب؟ فتذكّر أفرامالعجلة وعرف ذنبه فاستغفر ربّه. فلما صحا، في اليوم التالي، أخذ يسأل المساجين واحدًاواحدًا عما سلف من سيرتهم فتبيّن له أنّ على كلّ واحد منهم ذنبًا وذنوبًا لم يؤدّ عنهاالحساب، فتيقّن إذ ذاك أن ما ظنّه يصيب النّاس في حياتهم ظلمًا هو تأديب عن معاص سبقلهم أن ارتكبوها ولمّا يُجازوا عنها. إذ ذاك أدرك أن ما يحدث للنّاس لا يحدث لهم اتفاقًاوليس الكون من دون مدبّر يرعى شؤونه ويسهر على كلّ صغيرة وكبيرة فيه وإن كان لله فيأحكامه شؤون غير ما لأحكام النّاس وما هم عنه غافلون. فأخذ، وهو بعد في السّجن، يرجوالله بدموع أن يعفو عنه واعدًا إيّاه بإصلاح سيرته لو نجّاه من هذا البلاء المبين.وكان أن أُطلق سراحه فخرج من السّجن والقضاة في نفسه كما بنار وبات واثقًا من عدالةربّه وضعفه هو وفداحة خسارته إن لم يلحظ نفسه ويحرص على نقاوة سيرته، زهد وخرج فنسكفي القفار وأضحى للتائبين معلّمًا وللمتهاونين منخسًا. وله تُنسب صلاة التوبة الّتيطالما ردّدها المؤمنون في الكنيسة على مدى الأيام: "أيّها الرّبّ وسيّد حياتي،أعتقني من البطالة والفضول وحبّ الرّئاسة والكلام البطال. وأنعم عليّ أنا عبدك الخاطئبروح العفّة واتّضاع الفكر والصّبر والمحبّة. نعم يا ملكي وإلهي، هب لي أن أعرف ذبوبيوعيوبي وأن لا أدين إخوتي فإنّك مبارك إلى الأبد. آمين." كان قد بلغ من العمر،آنذاك، حدود الثامنة عشرة.

رهبنته

هزّت رؤى الدّينونة العتيدة أعماق أفرام فهرب من العالم وهموم العالمسالكًا في ما قاله مرنّم المزامير: "هاءنذا أبتعد هاربًا وآوي إلى القفار"(المزمور 54). همّه، على حدّ تعبير النّصصيّ، بات موجّهًا لنفسه والله. هكذا تقدّمفي اكتساب الفضيلة. "كان يعلّم أنّ حياة البريّة تحرّر الرّاغب فيها من صخب العالمالباطل، وتجعله كليم الملائكة عن طريق السّكينة وترفع ذهنه باستمرار إلى الرّؤى الإلهيّة."

لم تكن لحميّته في النّسك حدود: نوم على الأرض وصوم لأيّام بكاملها وسهرفي الصّلاة أكثر الليل وعمل وتعب في النّهار. كان قانونًا في كلّ أديرة مصر وبلاد مابين النّهرين أن يبذل النّسّاك أتعابًا جزيلة جزاء توبتهم وتكفيرًا عن معاصيهم السّالفة.وكان عليهم أن يقدّموا عن ذلك حسابًا في نهاية كلّ أسبوع. أفرام انضمّ إلى شيخ مباركاسمه يوليانوس وتتلمذ عليه. ولكن كان العمل اليومي مقرونًا بالصّلاة، فكان على كلّراهب أن يحفظ كتاب المزامير عن ظهر قلب. أما ما يحصّلونه فوق ما يحتاجو إليه فكانوايوزّعونه على الفقراء. الفقر عندهم كان التزامًا. لما قربت ساعة رحيله إلى السّماءقال: "لم تكن لأفرام محفظة ولا عصا ولا كيس مطلقًا. ولا امتلكت في حياتي شيئًامن الذهب أو الفضّة لأنّي سمعت الملك السّماويّ يقول لتلاميذه أن لا يقتنوا شيئًا علىالأرض. لذا لم أرغب بشيء بل ازدريت المجد والمال ومِلت إلى العلويات...".

وكان أفرام بطبعه غضوبًا، لكنّه عرف، بنعمة الله والانتباه والجهد المتواصل،أن يحصّل الوداعة حتّى سرى عليه لقب "رجل الله الوديع المسالم". نقل عنهالنّيصصيّ قوله قبل موته بقليل: "لم أُهن الله في حياتي كلّها ولم يصدر عن شفتيّكلام طائش ولا أسأت مطلقًا لأي من المؤمنين ولا تشاجرت البتّة مع أيّ منهم". فيتعاطيه مع الخطاة المعاندين كان لا يلجأ سوى للبكاء والاستعطاف. مرة أمضى في الصّومأيّامًا. فجاءه أحد الإخوة بقدر فيه خضار مطبوخة ليتشدّد. ولكن قبل أن يصل الأخ إليهبقليل تعثّر في مشيته ووقع القدر من يديه وانكسر فاضطرب ولم يدر ماذا يعمل. فبادرهأفرام بمحبّة ووداعة: "ما دام طعامنا لم يأتِ إلينا فلا بأس أن نذهب نحن إليه!"ولما قال هذا قام وانطرح على الأرض بجانب القدر المكسور والطعام المهدور وأخذ يلتقطمنه ما تيسّر ويأكل.

قال عنه النّيصصيّ إنّه توصّل إلى اكتساب طهارة نفسيّة وجسديّة إلى حدّفائق لا يمكن للطبيعة البشريّة أن تصل إليه، ولم يسمح لنفسه أن تميل عن سيادة الأفكارالقويمة الصّافية. "كان كملك روحيّ يتحكّم بقواه النّفسيّة ويشعّ ببهاء كليّ بحضورهالجسديّ".

ومن أبرز ما اختصّه به ربّه لنقاوة طويّته وعمق توبته وحفظ نفسه بريئًامن الدنس موهبة الدموع. كان يبكي لخطاياه وخطايا العالمين باستمرار. لا جفّت دموعهلا في ليل ولا في نهار. كما يبدو طبيعيًا للنّاس أن يتنفّسوا، على حدّ تعبير النّيصصيّ،كانت دموع أفرام لا تنقطع.

وكان أفرام يعتبر نفسه أشقى النّاس ويودّ لو يعامله الجميع كالسِقط. لذاكان لكلمات المديح في أذنيه وقع موجع. وكلّما طرقت أذنيه كلمة مديح تألّم وتغيّرت سحنتهوانحنى إلى الأرض وتصبّب عرقًا وصمت صمتًا رهيبًا وقطع لسانه الحياء. ولما حانت ساعةرحيله قال موصيًا: "لا ترنّموا لأفرام ترانيم الجنّاز ولا تمدحوه ولا تدفنوه بسبانفاخرة ولا تحفروا لجسده قبرًا خاصًا لأنّي اتفقت مع الله أن أستريح في مقبرة الغرباء".

عاش أفرام في بريّة نصيبين سنين عديدة كان خلالها كأنّه خارج الجسد وخارجالعالم، على حدّ تعبير القدّيس غريغوريوس اللاهوتيّ. وقد تعرّض لاضطهاد عدد من الرّهابينالفاترين. لكنّه استعان بمثال يوليانوس معلّمه ونصائحه. كان معلّمه إليه عزاء وكذلكيعقوب أسقف نصيبين الّذي احتضنه ورعاه وقدّمه وجعله رأسًا للمدرسة اللاهوتيّة الّتيأسّسها هناك.

من نصيبين إلى الرّها

وتعرّضت نصيبين لهجوم الفرس ومحاصرتهم لها فحافظ أفرام ويعقوب الأسقف،بصلاتهما، على المدينة. وقد ورد في سيرة القدّيس يعقوب (13 كانون الثاني) أنّه أصلحبصلاته سور المدينة بعدما انعطب وأن الله أرسل غيمة هائلة من البعوض أزعجت المهاجمينواضطرتهم إلى الانكفاء. لكنّ المدينة انتقلت إلى الفرس، فيما بعد، إثر معاهدة سلامأُبرمت بين الفرس والبيزنطيّين سنة 363 م وقضت بتسليم المدينة بعدما فشل يوليانوس الجاحدفي حملاته ضد الفرس في عمق بلادهم. على الأثر انتقل أفرام إلى الرها، على الطريق أنطاكيةالهند، وأقام فيها، أو بجوارها، إلى آخر حياته، أي بين العامين 363 و373 م. هذا إذاصدق أنّه توفي سنة 373، لا 378 م كما ورد في غير مكان.

جعل أفرام في نفسه، في انتقاله إلى الرّها، أمرين: أن يسجد لرفات القدّيسينفيها وأن يلتقي إنسانًا ينتفع من كلامه وإرشاده. لذا صلّى قائلاً: "أيّها الرّبّيسوع المسيح، سيّدي، أعطني أن أصادف في الرها من يحدّثني بما فيه منفعتي". فلمادخل المدينة طالعته امرأة هوى وقفت أمامه وحدّقت فيه. فقال لها أفرام ليصرفها عنه:"كيف تجرئين يا امرأة أن تنظري إليّ بمثل هذا الإصرار والوقاحة؟ ألا تخجلين مننفسك؟!" فأجابته: لست بمذنبة إذا نظرت إليك لأنّي خرجت من جنبك. أما أنت فخليقبك أن تحدّق في الأرض الّتي منها خرجت، لا سيما وأنت راهب تعتبر نفسك ميتًا في الجسد.فعليك ألا تحدّق مطلقًا في الوجوه!". فلما سمع البار مقالتها فطن إلى حكمة اللهوشكر المرأة ومجّد الله وانصرف.

وقيل، لما دخل أفرام المدينة حلّ، بصورة مؤقتة، في أحد البيوت حيث أقامتبجواره امرأة ناقصة الحشمة عزمت، بإيعاز من الشيطان، على الإيقاع به. فعرضت نفسها عليهفوافقها شرط أن يكملا فعل النّجاسة وسط المدينة، أمام الجميع. فقالت له: أما تخجل،يا هذا، من النّاس الّذين سيهزأون بنا؟! فأجابها: تخجلين من النّاس، يا شقيّة، ولاتخافين الله الّذي يرى ما نعمل، في الخفية والعلن، ويعاقبنا عقابًا أبديًا شديدًا فيمانستسلم نحن لمتع الخطيئة؟! فنفذ خوف الله إلى قلبها وتابت، وقيل ترهّبت وأرضت اللهبسيرة حميدة. هذا وذُكر أن أفرام تردّد، في الرّها، على النّسّاك المنتشرين في قفارهاوتعلّم منهم، وإنّ صيته انتشر فجاءه الكثيرون يطلبون الانضمام إليه، وأنّه أسّس ديرًابجوار الرها وجعل فيه مدرسة لاهوتية اشتهرت، وصار أبًا لمئات من النّسّاك والرّهبان.

معلّم وشاعر

تمتّع أفرام بمواهب طبيعية فذّة أنماها وصقلها بالدرس والتأمل في الكتابالمقدّس وكتابات الآباء. وقد حباه ربّه بموهبة التعليم فأضحى واعظًا ومعلّمًا ممتازًا.أتقن الكتاب المقدّس إتقانًا عظيمًا. النّيصصيّ تحدّث عن اشتعال لهيب الكتاب فيه وأنّهبشوقه للدّراسة والتأمّل ارتفع كلهيب سماويّ وطالع العهدين القديم والجديد فنفذ إلىالمعاني الإلهيّة أكثر من أي شخص آخر.

شرح أفرام، بدقّة، الكتاب كلّه من سفر التكوين إلى آخر سفر من عهد النّعمة،كما نقل إلى النّور أعماق الحقائق الإلهية غير المدركة. لم يرتشف من الكأس الرّوحيّةوحسب بل اقتبل أيضًا ما كان مفيدًا من كتابات الحكمة العالميّة. طالع، بشهادة النّيصصيّ،التراث الأدبيّ واطلع على أبعاد معانيه، لكنّه طرح جانبًا ما كان غير نافع منه.

عرف أفرام السّريانيّة بامتياز. كان سيّد الكلمة بكلّ معنى الكلمة. كتبفي السّريانيّة برشاقة نفّاذة ولياقة أخّاذة. طواعية الكلمة لديه كانت خارقة. انسابتالكلمات منه كالجدول الرّقراق. وكان، كذلك، كنبع دفّاق. لم تكن له صعوبة في اللغة بلفي كثافة الأفكار والصّور الّتي أغدق بها عليه ربّه. لذا توسّل أن يمسك عنه ربّه عطيةالأفكار الغزيرة المختارة: "هدّئ عني يا رب أمواج نعمتك!" قال هذا، بكلامالنّيصصيّ، "لأنّ لسانه كان يحوي بحرًا شاسعًا من التعليم لا يمكنه التعبير عنأمواجه المتراكمة". مفاهيمه كانت واضحة شفّافة. أداؤه صاف ممتع. تكلّم بيسر وغزارةعجيبين وبأسلوب رشيق جامع مانع لا تكلّف فيه، مطعّم بحلاوة جزيلة وقوّة مؤثّرة ونبرةطبيعية وإحساس مرهف وعاطفة جيّاشة حتّى كانت الكلمات تخرج من فمه مشحونة بقوة لا تُقاوم.كلّ هذا حمل النّيصصيّ على تأكيد نفاذ أقوال القدّيس إلى كلّ قلب بالتسآل: "منهو ذاك الإنسان المتصلّب والقاسي القلب الّذي سمع كلامه ولم يلن ولا حزن لخطاياه تاركًاقساوة طبعه؟ أم أي نفس بربرية أو أي شخص وحشي التصرّف سمع تعليمه ولم يصر للتوّ صالحًا،وديعًا فاضلاً؟ مّن مِن الّذين ينشدون فرح الملذّات المادية تاركين الدموع جانبًا إذاأنصت لكلامه لا يحزن ويبكي متذكّرًا الجزاء الآتي؟..."

أفرام والهرطقات

عكف القدّيس أفرام على دراسة عقائد الكنيسة بدقّة، بتعبير النّيصصيّ"كان البار أفرام قويم الإيمان، لا يخطئ أبدًا في أمور العقيدة، كما نستنتج منكتاباته ومن رأي الكنيسة فيه". وقد هدى العديد من الوثنيّين إلى الإيمان وأصلحجمًّا من الهراطقة. دحض بدعة آريوس بشأن الألوهة وبدعة صباليوس القائلة بالآب والابنوالرّوح القدس مجرّد ظواهر لإله واحد. كما طعن، بقوة، بمعتقد أبوليناريوس الّذي طعنبإنسانيّة الرّبّ يسوع الكاملة، وتصدّى لأتباع أفنوميوس الآريوسي الّذي أكّد لا مساواةالآب والابن في الجوهر. القدّيس إيرونيموس يوصي بكتاب أفرام ضد بدعة مقدونيوس الّذيطعن بألوهية الرّوح القدس. ولم يقف أفرام عند هذا الحد بل تصدّى، بقوّة، للمرقيونيةوالمانوية والبردسانية الّتي تنكّرت لقيامة الجسد. يذكر أن بردسان وضع أناشيد ضمّنهاقوله ونشرها بين النّاس في الرّها. وقد واجه أفرام هذا الأسلوب بأسلوب مثله فجعل التعليمالقويم في أناشيد بديعة جرت على ألسنة النّاس بيسر. ويذهب النّيصصي في حماسه لأفرام،الّذي أسماه "ابن الحقيقة"، إلى حدّ القول عنه إنّه "تصدّى لما يمكنأن يبذره الشيطان الشرّير من هرطقات لاحقة بفضل رؤياه النبويّة. كلّ ذلك يظهر في كتاباتهالنثرية والشعريّة".

سيامته

سيم أفرام شمّاسًا وعُرف بشمّاس كنيسة الرّها. من سامه؟ قيل القدّيس يعقوب،أسقف نصيبين، وقيل القدّيس باسيليوس الكبير. أمّا كهنوته فغير مؤكّد. ورد أنّه سيمكاهنًا في أواخر حياته. أمفيلوخيوس القدّيس، أسقف إيقونية، وكبريانوس الرّاهب المرنّميشهدان لذلك، وربما النيصصيّ نفسه الّذي قال عنه إنّه "كان اقتدى بذبيحة هابيلالبار الأوّل". كما ورد أنّه اختير للأسقفيّة فارتاع، ولفرط تواضعه تظاهر بالجنونوأخذ يركض ويصيح ويأكل في الشارع فتركوه واختاروا سواه.

أفرام وباسيليوس وبيوس

يُشار إلى أنّ ثمه من يقول إنّ القدّيسَين أفرام وباسيليوس التقيا. ذهبأفرام إلى باسيليوس، إثر رؤيا، برفقة مترجم من اليونانيّة وإليها، وسمعه وانتفع منه،وقيل أعطاه باسيليوس، بنعمة الله، أن يتكلّم اليونانيّة بطلاقة وسامه كاهنًا. النّيصصيّقال إنّ أفرام جاء إلى قيصريّة الكبّادوك بإرشاد الرّوح القدس فالتقى باسيليوس الكبير،فم الكنيسة وعندليب العقائد الإلهيّة الذهبيّ، وشاهد، بعين نفسه الثّاقبة، حمامة قائمةعلى كتف القدّيس باسيليوس الأيمن تملي عليه الأقوال التعليميّة وهو بدوره ينقلها إلىالشعب".

من جهة أخرى ورد أنّ القدّيس أفرام ذهب إلى القدّيس الأنبا بيوس (بيشوي)،المُعيّد له عندنا في 2 تموز، وتبادل وإيّاه كلامًا روحيًا جميلاً، ثم عاد إلى ديارهعلى سحاب الهواء.

محبّته وخدمته

أتصف القدّيس أفرام بفضيلة محبّة القريب فأخذ على عاتقه مهمّة توزيع القمحعلى الفقراء في الرّها لما حلّت به المجاعة، وقيل رتّب مستشفى بثلاثمائة سرير لمعاينةالمصابين. كما عزّى الغرباء والمساكين بأقواله الخلاصيّة وحثّ الأغنياء على فتح خزائنهملإعانة المعوزين. وفي رأي النّيصصيّ أن المحبّة، الّتي هي أعظم الفضائل، قد اكتسبهاالمغبوط أكثر من أي شخص آخر.

كتاباته

انتاج القدّيس أفرام كان ضخمًا. كتب بلغة شاعرية لا مثيل لها. شملت تفاسيرهالكتابيّة أكثر أسفار العهدي العتيق والجديد. كما وضع مقالات ضدّ الهرطقات وترك أناشيدعن الفردوس والبتولية والإيمان والأسرار الكبرى للمخلّص وأعياد السّنة. قسم كبير منأناشيده دخل في الكتب الليتورجيّة السّريانيّة. وقد شهد آباء كثيرون لأهمية مؤلفاتهحتّى إنّ شروحه كانت تُقرأ في الكنيسة بعد تلاوة الكتاب المقدّس. كلّ هذا جعل الكنيسةتدعوه "قيثارة الرّوح القدس" و"معلّم المسكونة". لم يصلنا من مؤلفاتهإلا جزء ضئيل، وهو عبارة عن ستة أجزاء، ثلاثة منه باليونانيّة واللاتينيّة وثلاثة بالسّريانيّةواللاتينيّة. قيل إنّه وضع بالسّريانيّة ثلاثة ملايين بيت من الشعر. وقد عُرفت باكرًافي اليونانيّة مؤلفاته النّسكيّة الّتي هي بمثابة تعاليم روحيّة للرهبان الّذين عرفهموعاش بينهم. ويلاحظ ارتباط تعاليمه الرّوحيّة الوثيق بالكتاب المقدّس الّذي كان يوردآياته بتصرّف وغزارة ويسر في سياق كلامه.

رقاده

كثيرًا ما كان القدّيس أفرام يشعر بالأسى والسّخط والاضطراب متى أدركأنّ الآخرين يعاملونه كقدّيس أو متى عبّروا عن إكرامهم وتقديرهم له. فلمّا دنت ساعتهأوصى تلاميذه وأصدقائه قائلاً: "لا ترتّلوا الأناشيد الجنائزية في دفن أفرام ولاتؤبّنوه. لا تلفّوا جثتي في كفن غالي الثمن. لا تقيموا النّصب لتذكاري. فقط خصّصوالي مكانًا كما لسائح لأنّي سائح وغريب كما كان آبائي على الأرض". وإذ لاحظ أنّالبعض كانوا قد هيّأوا أغطية ثمينة لدفنه حذّرهم من أن يفعلوا وأشار عليهم بضرورة صرفالأموال لا على الأكفان بل على الفقراء. أحد الأغنياء أبى أن يسمع وعزم، في قلبه، علىتنفيذ مأربه فاستبدّ به الشيطان ولم يتركه إلاّ بعدما صلّى عليه القدّيس وكشف له فكرقلبه وصرفه عما كان مزمعًا أن يقوم به.

كذلك اعترف القدّيس بكونه رجلاً خاطئًا بطّالاً وطلب من الحاضرين ألايجعلوا رماده الآثم تحت المذبح ولا يأخذ أحد شيئًا من أسماله للبركة ولا يعامله أحدبكرامة لأنّه كان خاطئًا وآخر الجميع. "بل ألقوا جسدي بسرعة على أكتافكم وارمونيفي المقبرة كأنّي السّقط. لا يمدحنّني أحد لأنّي أخسّ النّاس. ولكي تعاملوني كما أستأهلابصقوا عليّ. لو قُيّد لكم أن تشتموا نتانة أعمالي لفررتم مني وتركتموني بلا دفن".كلّ المدينة اجتمعت عند بابه. الكلّ بكى وسعى للدنو منه ليسمع ولو نصيحة أخيرة من فمه.ثم توقّف أفرام عن الكلام واستمرّ في صلاته بصمت إلى أن أسلم الرّوح.

وقد حفظت مدينة الرها ذكره وأخذت تُعيّد له بعد موته مباشرة. هناك، فيعيده، يبدو أن القدّيس غريغوريوس النّيصصيّ ألقى مديحته بناء لطلب شخص يدعى أفرام أسرهالإسماعليّون وقيّدوه فاستجار بالقدّيس أفرام فأجاره.

وقد ورد ذكره قدّيسًا في الغرب في أوّل شباط و9 تموز فيما ورد عندنا في28 كانون الثاني. يصوّر طويل القامة، محدودبًا من ثقل الأيام، عذبًا، جميل المحيّا،ذا عينين سابحتين بالدمع وفي نظرته وهيئته سمات القداسة.

المكرم ابينا البار جرجس الخوزيبي

المكرم جرجس الخوزيبي ، هو من قبرص . غادر قريته بعد وفاة والديه لينضوي في دير في فلسطين بعد ان استأذن عمه الوصي . وفي هذا الدير الشهير ، دير خوزيب الواقع بين اورشليم واريحا ، ادهش الشاب المتأمل اخوته الرهبان بحماسته وغيرته وعزيمته في التخلي عن كل اسباب الراحة والملذات طمعا في مجد الهي اعظم .

وجرجس المكرم الذي سيصبح في يوم من الايام رئيس على الدير نفسه وضع نصب عينيه نموذجا لنكران الذات ، فكان يقضي السهرانات واقفا ، ويقضي اياما عديدة بدون طعام . وبنتيجة ذلك خارت قواه ، الا انه اصبح اشد بأسا مع الايام . الى ذلك اصبح اكثر بشاشة وحبورا لأن جهاداته ازدادت . وبحسب اباء الكنيسة ، كان القديس جرجس لتناقض عظيم واجههه نساك ورهبان كثيرون في تاريخ الكنيسة . فكلما كان هؤلاء القديسون يقسون على انفسهم لجهة الملذات الارضية ، كلما كانوا يصبحون اكثر قناعة واكثر رضا

كان للقديس جرجس ابن والدين ورعين ،واخ اكبر يدعى هيراكليديس سافر الى الارض المقدسة وقد الهم اخاه ان يفعل الشيء عينه . وبعد موت والديه فان الشاب الشديد الحماسة والغيرة رفض فكرة عمه الوصي بالزواج ، وبدلا من ذلك ، غادر قبرص الى الابد ورحل الى الارض المقدسة . وهناك انضم الى اخيه في دير كالامون في فلسطين .

وفي النهاية فان جرجس الرصين وجد نفسه يعيش راهبا في خوزيب . وهذا الراهب كان متواضعا طيب المعشر ، اطاع كل قانون بدون تأفف ، وقد احتمل الكثير من مربيه . وفي احدى المناسبات بينما كان الاثنان يعملان في البستان في خراج الدير، نفذ صبر الاخ الاكبر ، فقام وصفعه على وجهه .

وما تلى ذلك ، كان مشهدا رهيبا ،فقد يبست يد الاخ الاكبر ولم تعد ذات نفع . ففزع من العدل الالهي ، فقام واعتذر للقديس جرجس وطلب منه السماح فما كان من القديس جرجس الا ان قبل ، وسامحه على الفور ، وركع الاثنان امام بعضهما في الصلاة ، فعادت ذراع الاخ الاكبر الى عافيته وحركته . بالنسبة للراهب المتواضع الذي من قبرص ، كانت حادثة الذراع واحدة من سلسلة طويلة من العجائب التي تدافع عن سيرته المتشددة وحياته في التقوى . وفي يوم مهم اخر ، قام الراهب الشاب وفتح ابواب الدير ، فوجد امامه اسدا يربض عند المدخل . فكانت ردة فعله مذهلة : بدل ان يصرخ هلعا ، دفع بالاسد جانبا وتابع طريقه . ولئن كانت قصة هذا الرجل الذي لا يهاب الاسود قد انتشرت في كل مكان ، الا ان القديس جرجس لم يجد في الامر ما يدعو الى العجب . كان ايمانه عظيما ، فهو كان على يقين من ان الله سيحميه من الاسد ، فلم يكترث البتة .

كان القديس جرجس يلبس المسوح الى الكنيسة ، ويأكل ما يفضل عن الاخوة الرهبان ، ويقضي الليالي في قلايته في الايام الممطرة والباردة . وقد اجترح عددا من المعجزات . احداها عندما وضع احد جيران الدير في البرية طفلا ميتا في سلة للثمار عند بوابة الدير ورحل . تجاوب القديس جرجس مع الحدث بتواضع ، فصلى الى الله ان يحفظه ويحميه من الكبرياء اذا هو اعاد الحياة للطفل . ثم تضرع الى الله ان يتدخل في الامر ، فلم يندهش عندما راح الصبي يتحرك داخل السلة .

وعندما رقد في شيخوخة متقدمة بعيد الاجتياح الفارسي لفلسطين سنة 614 ب م اعتبرته فلسطين كلها ابا روحيا عظيما في الكنيسة المقدسة . وفي نهاية حياته الارضية ساعد القديس جرجس في تأسيس نموذج لنكران الذات والتواضع في خدمة الله القدير ، وهو نفسه كان يخدم القدير بكل ارادته كرئيس على دير خوزيب .

ان حياة القديس جرجس الخوزيبي توضح حقيقة قوية مفادها ان نكران الذات من اجل مجد اللهمن شأنه ان يجعل الراهب شكورا ووقورا وغير محروم اي شيء . حتى ان الذين ينكرون ذواتهم من اجل الله سؤعان ما يجدون اعظم سعادة يمكن لأنسان ان يذوقها .

لقد خيّط البسط كي يعد ثيابه . وكانت وجباته تقتصر على ما يتبقى في مطبخ الدير . وعاش على نحو جعل بعض مؤرخي الكنيسة يعتقدون انه النمط الاكثر شظفا لراهب ينتمي الى الكنيسة المقدسة .

Venerable George the Chozebite

January 8th

He sewed rags together in order to make his clothes, and his meals consisted of dried leftovers from the community kitchen that he ground into thick, tasteless cakes. Disdaining oil, butter and wine, he lived what some Church historians believe may have been the most ascetic life of any monk who ever belonged to the Holy Church.

Venerable George the Chozebite, a native of Cyprus, left his native village after the death of his parents and entered a monastery in Palestine with the permission of his guardian-uncle. Here, at the highly regarded Hozeva Monastery located between Jerusalem and Jericho, the youthful contemplative would amaze his fellow monks with his fiery zeal and his determination to give up all forms of comfort and pleasure for the greater glory of God.

Venerable George, who would one day become the abbot of his own monastery, set a high standard for self-denial, while often remaining in a standing-in-position vigil throughout the night and going for days at a time without food. Rather than becoming weakened and frail as a result of these ordeals, however, he became stronger with each passing day. In addition, he seemed to grow increasingly joyful as his self-prescribed mortifications increased. According to the Church Fathers, Venerable George was a powerful example of the great paradox that has been encountered by many holy ascetics during the life of the Church: The more these self-denying saints deprive themselves of earthly goods and pleasures, the more contented and satisfied they become! St. George, the son of pious Christians, had an elder brother named Heracleides who traveled to the Holy Land and inspired his sibling to do the same. Soon after his parents’ death, the fervent young man rejected his guardian’s suggestion that he marry and instead left Cyprus forever and journeyed to the Holy Land. There he joined his brother briefly at the Lavra of Kalamon in Palestine.

Eventually, this spiritually minded George found himself living as a monk at Hozeva. Humble and soft-spoken, the earnest monastic obeyed every order he received without complaint . . . and suffered greatly at the hands of his stern and harsh mentor, as a result. On one occasion, while the two of them were working as gardeners on the monastery grounds, the elder monk became so impatient that he wound up striking his companion in the face.

What followed was a shocking scene . . . as the elder devotee’s arm shriveled completely, leaving it grotesquely shrunken and useless. Terrified by this display of heavenly justice, the older man apologized profusely and begged St. George’s forgiveness. The kind-hearted youth readily forgave his tormentor, of course, and as the two of them knelt in prayer, the damaged arm was suddenly restored to its normal size!

For the humble monastic from Cyprus, the incident of the shrinking arm was only one in a series of miracles that defined his long and austere life of ascetic piety. On another remarkable day, the fearless saint opened the front door of the monastery . . . and found an enormous lion blocking his path. His reaction was surprising: Instead of quaking in fear, St. George simply pushed the great cat out of his path and went on his way! Although the legend of the man who did not fear lions soon spread throughout the region, the humble George saw nothing unusual in his behavior. So great was his faith that he simply assumed that God would protect him from the huge animal, and didn’t give him a second thought!

During a long and extraordinarily disciplined life, St. George the Chozebite wore rags to church, ate the leftovers from the monastery tables and spent many nights shivering in his cell in cold, rainy weather. He also performed more than a few miracles . . . including one in which a neighboring desert-dweller left a deceased infant in a fruit basket on the doorstep of the monastery. Responding to the discovery with typical humility, St. George first prayed to God to protect him from false pride, if he should succeed in reviving the dead child. He then asked God to intervene – and he wasn’t at all surprised when the baby began to wail lustily from his makeshift crib!

When he finally died in old age – soon after the Persian invasion of Palestine in 614 A.D. – he was regarded throughout much of the Holy Land as a great spiritual Father of the Holy Church. By the end of his time on earth, St. George had helped to establish a new standard for both self-denial and humility in the service of Almighty God, even as he served willingly in the role of abbot at Hozeva.

The life of Venerable George the Chozebite illustrates a compelling truth: the fact that self-denial for the greater glory of God invariably leaves the ascetic feeling thankful and reverent, rather than deprived. So vast and generous is the love of God that those who deny themselves in order to praise the deity soon discover the greatest form of happiness a human being can know!

Thou didst prove to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O George, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil and prayer thou didst obtain heavenly gifts, and thou healest the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to thee with faith. Glory to Him that hath given thee strength. Glory to Him that hath crowned thee. Glory to Him that worketh healings for all through thee.

العظيمة في الشهيدات كاترينا الكلية الحكمة

من النظرة الاولى ، بدت كاترينا اميرة جميلة في قصة جميلة . كانت صبية جميلة ، والجميع متفقون على ذلك ، الا انها كانت عفيفة ايضا ، طاهرة في عاداتها ، وثابتة على ايمانها بربها ومخلصها يسوع المسيح .
25تشرين الثاني

من كان يظن عندما يلتقي كاترينا الشابة من الاسكندرية الارستقراطية المحتد ، انها سوف تنهي حياتها وهي ممدة على دولاب التعذيب ، ومن ثم يقطع رأسها بلا هوادة؟

بدأت قصة كاترينا الكلية الحكمة في الاسكندرية المركز المصري العظيم ، عندما ولدت سنة 287 . وكأبنة لثري نبيل يدعى كوستا او كيستوس ( بحسب بعض المؤرخين ) . ترعرعت وسط الامتيازات والبحبوحة ، واخذت حظا وافرا من علوم عصرها ( الخطابة والفلسفة ). الا ان قلبها كان عند الرب يسوع المسيح ، لا عند الكتب ، سيما بعد اهتدائها الى الايمان المسيحي على يد امها التقية والورعة .

اشتد عودها ، ونما ايمانها وتعمق بعد ان قضت الليالي في الصلاة امام ايقونة والدة الاله والرب يسوع المسيح .... وقد ظهر الاثنان لها في حلم . انذهلت الصبية كاترينا ، الا انها سرعان ما حونت عندما اشاح الفادي القدوس النظر اليها ، لأنها غير مستحقة .

وبعد ان تدارست هذا الحلم الغريب مع رجل قديس ، نصحها بالصلاة والصوم. فظهرت لها ام الله ويسوع ثانية . لكن في هذه المرة بدا الرب راضيا عنها ، وقدم لها هدية . عندما نهضت من نومها اكتشفت ان خاتما لماعا كان قد وضع على اصبعها في الليل . وسوف يظل على اصبعها حتى نهاية حياتها في البتولية كعروس للمسيح ، فهي لن تتزوج انسانا فانيا .

والان ، فقد تغير عالم كاترينا الى الابد ، الا ان حياتها كبتول تصلي وتتأمل لم تكن لتروق الامبراطور مكسيميوس المعجب بها منذ امد بعيد ، والذي كان قد تقدم بطلب يدها للزواج غير مرة . فرفضته كاترينا بلطف ، لا بل انها تجرأت على تحديه لجهة علاقته بالالهة الوثنية التي كان يتعبدها على الدوام .

ولما رأت خضوعه للالهة الوثنية والحيوانات المقدسة ، تجاسرت وقالت للامبراطور ان هذه الالهة الكاذبة هي شياطين الضلال المحض . لأن هناك الها واحدا حقيقيا ، وكلمته تحفظ العالم وتصونه .

فعارضها مكسيمينوس بشدة على افكارها الثورية . وبعد حين جمع فلاسفته الاكثر علما ، وخطباء البلاط ، ليتناقش واياهم افكار الصبية المؤمنة . وكان بين المفكرين اللامعين واحد من الخطباء البارعين الذي بدا واثقا من قدرته على التأثير على كاترينا بعلومه ، وقدرته على الاقناع . ولكن ياللدهشة ، فالنتائج جاءت معاكسة تماما .

والشكر للنعمة التي فاضت من المخلص ، ومن افتقاد رئيس الملائكة مخائيل لكاترينا . فاستطاعت كاترينا ان تحاجج العلماء والفصحاء فكانت تقتبس اقوالا من الهتهم وشعرائهم . . وقد بيّنت لهم المرة تلو الاخرى كيف ان كلماتهم القديمة تنبأت عن مجيء الاله الحقيقي الفادي يسوع المسيح .

فاستشاط الحاضرون غضبا بسبب اخفاقهم ، للحال اوعز الامبراطور بأن يقتل جميع المجتمعين ، فقد تمكنت كاترينا ان تهديهم الى المسيحية في لحظة ، وذلك برسم علامة الصليب على جباههم . !

ولما ادرك انه عاجطز عن ثنيها عن موقفها بالتملق والاطراء ، او بتقديم عروض الزواج منها كي تصبح ملكة عظيمة ، اصدر امرا بأعدامها .

ذهلت الملكة من شجاعة كاترينا . وقام مئتا جندي بزيارة كاترينا في سجنها ، وجميعهم اهتدوا الى الايمان بالانجيل . وسرعان ما دفعوا حياتهم ثمنا لاعتناقهم الايمان الجديد .

وفي سنة 305 خضعت بتول الاسكندرية لعذابات عظيمة فمزقت لحمانها على الدولاب . وقد ظهر لها ملاك من السماء عند ساعة موتها وهشم الة التعذيب بسيفه الناري . الا ان الملاك اتى متأخرا ، فقد صدر امر بقطع رأس كاترينا ، الامر الذي اذهل الحاضرين الذين راحوا يشاهدون الحليب يتدفق من جسدها بدلا من الدم . .

وفي النهاية نقل الملائكة رفاتها الى طور سيناء حيث جرى اكتشافها بعد سنوات في دير شهير يحمل اسمها .

ان حياة القديسة كاترينا تقدم لنا مثالا ملهما عن كيف ان المحبة الارضية المحدودة تتجذر في محبة يسوع المسيح اللامحدودة . وبدل انتقاء زوج ارضي ، فان هذه الصبية الشجاعة جعلت حياتها في خدمة انجيل الرب يسوع المسيح . وتبين قصتها لنا كيف ان حكمة الله قادرة ان تبدد مزاعم الحكمة البشرية . فلاسفة الامبراطور العظماء الذين واجهوا الحكمة الالهية تحولوا الى اغبياء كما يقول الرسول بولس عندما يتأمل في محدودية الفكر البشري .

ولعل اعظم اهمية في حياة كاترينا هي في الطريقة التي امنت بها بفداء الرب يسوع للبشرية من الخطيئة ، حتى انها استرخصت حياتها ولم تتنكر للرسالة الخلاصية . افلا يليق ان نمتلك جميعنا مثل هذه الشجاعة !

Great-Martyr Catherine
the All-Wise of Alexandria

At first glance, she seemed to be a beautiful princess in some golden fairy tale.

She was a lovely young maiden, everyone agreed – but also chaste, modest in her habits, and quietly steadfast in her faithfulness to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Who would have guessed – meeting the youthful Catherine of Alexandria, a maiden of aristocratic bearing and lineage – that she would end her life while being tortured on the spikes of an iron wheel, and then ruthlessly beheaded?

The story of Catherine the All-Wise began in that great Egyptian center of learning, Alexandria, where she was born around 287 A.D., as the daughter of a wealthy nobleman named Constas (or Cestus, according to some historians). Raised in a setting of privilege and luxury, the young St. Catherine soon became adept at rhetoric and philosophy. But her heart would belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, and not to mere books, after she was converted to the Christian faith by her pious and devoted mother.

Already strong, St. Catherine’s faith grew even deeper after she prayed through the night before an icon of The Theotokos and Jesus . . . and then watched both of them materialize in a dream. The young girl was amazed, but also disheartened when the Holy Redeemer seemed to avoid her eyes, while noting that she was unworthy.TAKEN FROM

After reviewing this strange dream with a holy man (he recommended prayer and fasting), she experienced the vision a second time. But this time the Lord God appeared

to approve of her, and presented her with a beautiful keepsake. When she awoke, she discovered that a glittering ring had indeed been placed on her finger during the night. It would remain there for the rest of her virginal life as a “bride” of Christ who would never marry a mortal man.

St. Catherine’s world had changed forever now, but her celibate life of prayer and meditation did not please the Emperor Maximinus, a longtime admirer who had proposed marriage to her more than once. Refusing him politely, the youthful saint also dared to challenge his attachment to the pagan gods he so frequently worshipped.

While observing his enslavement to the pagan gods and sacred animals of his misguided faith (but more in sorrow than in anger), St. Catherine told the Emperor that these false deities were actually demons of pure illusion. “There is only one God,” she told the increasingly angry tyrant in words like these, “and his Word maintains the World!”

Maximinus disagreed violently with her revolutionary ideas, however . . . and soon assembled more than a hundred of his most accomplished philosophers and rhetoricians to debate the faithful young maiden. Among the brilliant thinkers was the formidable Rhetors, a debater of exquisite skill who seemed certain to overwhelm this young girl with his vast learning and his immense ability to argue.

Surprisingly enough, however, the outcome was quite different.

Thanks to the Grace that flowed from her Savior (and also to a visit from the Archangel Michael), St. Catherine was able to outwit the debaters – along with the nimble-tongued Rhetors – by quoting phrases from their own gods and poets. Again and again, she showed how their ancient words actually foretold the arrival of the One True God, the Redeemer Jesus Christ.

Enraged by their failure, the infuriated Maximinus instantly condemned the entire assemblage of philosophers to death . . . only to watch her convert them to Christianity in a moment by making the Sign of the Cross above their heads!

Realizing that he could not change her mind with flattery – or with offers to marry her and thus make her a great queen – the embittered Emperor at last gave up his quest and gave orders for her execution to proceed.

Astounded by her courage and her obvious faith, the Emperor's wife, his military commander, and 200 of his soldiers visited St. Catherine in prison – and all were converted to the Gospel. (They soon paid for their conversion with their lives, however.)

In the year 305, the virgin of Alexandria was tortured hideously by being torn on a spiked wheel . . . although an Angel of the Lord appeared when she was near the point of death and smashed the device to slivers with his fiery sword. Yet the Angel had arrived too late. St. Catherine was beheaded with a sword, and the gaping onlookers were then amazed to see that great quantities of fresh milk flowed from her body, rather than blood.

Eventually, her holy relics were conveyed by Angels to Mt. Sinai, where they were discovered many years later and then preserved at a well-known monastery that was named for her.

The life of St. Catherine offers us a revealing example of how our earthly, finite love is rooted in the Infinite Love of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Instead of choosing an earthly husband, the valiant young woman pledged her life to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. Her story also demonstrates how the wisdom of God easily demolishes any human claims to “wisdom.” Faced with Divine Wisdom, the one hundred human philosophers of the Emperor were instantly reduced to the “foolishness” that St. Paul so powerfully describes, while reflecting on the limitations of merely human thought.

Perhaps St. Catherine’s greatest significance can be found in the way she believed in Christ’s Redemption of humankind from sin – and in the fact that she was willing to forfeit her life rather than renounce His saving message. Would that we could all own that kind of courage!

Let us praise the all-lauded and noble bride of Christ, the godly Catherine, the guardian of Sinai and its defence, who is also our support and succour and our help; for with the Holy Spirit’s sword she hath silenced brilliantly the clever among the godless; and being crowned as a Martyr, she now doth ask great mercy for us all.

يجد اعتقاد الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية بالملاك الحارس دعماً زاخراً في تحذير السيّد: "اُنْظُرُوا، لاَ تَحْتَقِرُوا أَحَدَ هؤُلاَءِ الصِّغَارِ، لأَنِّي أَقُولُ لَكُمْ: إِنَّ مَلاَئِكَتَهُمْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ كُلَّ حِينٍ يَنْظُرُونَ وَجْهَ أَبِي الَّذِي فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ" (متى 10:18) لوقا، في إشارة إلى ملاك بطرس، يشهد لهذا الاعتقاد بين مسيحيي القرون الأولى (أعمال 15:12).هذه الإشارات تشير إلى أنّ الملائكة الحارسين كانوا معروفين جيداً لدى قارئَي متى ولوقا، ولا تحتاج الفكرة لأي شرح.

القديسة تقلا أولى الشهيدات والمعادلة الرسل

وُلدت القديسة تقلا في مدينة أنطاكية في تركيا، من والدين وثنيين في سنة /20/م، وكان والدها والياً على إنطاكية وأمها سيدة فاضلة ومتمسكين بدين آبائهما الوثنية، ونشأت القديسة في هذا البيت وترعرعت فيه وتنعمت بالجاه والثراء ورفاه العيش، وكانت ذات حسن وجمال حتى أن طالبيها للزواج أصبحوا لا يحصون عدداً وتقدم منها شاب اسمه ناماريوس إلى خطبتها وهو أمير وثني ومن أعيان وشرفاء البلاد ووصل بحبه لها حتى العبادة، وكانت ذات عقل ثاقب وشديدة الرغبة في تحصيل العلوم والمعارف، فانكبت على الدراسة وكانت فصيحة اللسان.

أثناء ذلك جاء القديسان بولس وبرنابا الى إنطاكية يبشران بإنجيل الرب يسوع ويعلما الناس داعيان إياهم إلى المسيحية ونبذ الوثنية، فسمعت القديسة تعاليم القديس بولس واستهوتها تعاليمه فآمنت بالرب يسوع وأشرق في قلبها نور لم تألفه من قبل، نور المسيح

المضيء للجميع، غير أن اليهود أثاروا الوثنيين ضد القديس بولس ورفيقه برنابا لأنهما كانا جريئين في دعوتهما ويدعمان تعاليمهما بالعجائب، وقبضوا عليهما وقرروا رجمهما، فما أن حل الظلام حتى نزلت القديسة إلى السجن بعد أن رشت حارسه بالمال بعد أن باعت كل ذهبها وحليها الخاص لهذه الغاية، وتلقنت من بولس التعاليم السماوية وغادروا ثلاثتهم السجن إلى مكان أكثر أماناً، وكانت تقضي أوقاتها بالصلاة إلى الله وتتأمل كلام الرسول بولس وتعمل به.

رافقت بولس إلى مدينة أثينا التي كانت عاصمة الفكر والفن الإغريقي، حيث تلاطمت فيها العبادات للآلهة العديدة فثار بولس وراح يخاطب اليهود في كل مكان، حتى أن الوثنيين أصبحوا يصغون إليه بكل انتباه وقبول، وكان كل ذلك على مرأى ومسمع من القديسة تقلا فازداد قلبها إيماناً بيسوع المسيح ابن الله الوحيد.

سمع الأبوان عن ابنتهما كل شيء، وحاولا إقناعها بجميع الوسائل الممكنة ولكن دون جدوى، وعندما عجز والدها من إقناعها، وخوف والدها على مركزه وبتحريض الآخرين له سلمها إلى الحاكم الذي زجها إلى الأسود التي تراجعت وهدأت عندما شاهدت القديسة، ثم أمر بأن تُحرق بالنار وساعة تنفيذ الحكم أبرقت السماء وأرعدت وانهمر المطر الغزير مما جعل تنفيذ الحكم مستحيلاً، ولما لم تفلح النار بها، ربطها إلى طرفي ثورين جانحين ليشطراها شطرين إلا أن الثيران رفضت تنفيذ المهمة مما حيَّر الحاكم بأمرها، فأراد أن يتخلص منها فألقاها في حفرة عميقة مليئة بالثعابين السامة، فنزلت نار من السماء وأحرقت الثعابين ونجت القديسة من الحكم، فدهش الوالي من تلك المعجزات المتكررة وخاف من هياج الشعب ضده، فاستدعى القديسة وسألها: "مَنْ أنتِ أيتها الفتاة، وما الذي يرد عنكِ هذه الوحوش والحيوانات المفترسة ويحميكِ من تنفيذه أوامري"؟.. فأجابته: "أنا تقلا أمَةُ يسوع المسيح ابن الله الحي وهو نجاة المأسورين وتعزية الحزانى، وهو الذي أنقذني من الوحوش والموت، ويحفظني بنعمته وله لمجد والكرامة".

حينئذٍ أعلن الوالي أمام الشعب وقال: "إن تقلا أمَةٌ يسوع المسيح هي طليقة حرة"، فتعالت أصوات الفرح وخرجت البتول من بينهم وذهبت إلى بيت السيدة الشريفة طروفينا التي كانت تعطف عليها، فاتجهت القديسة من أنطاكية إلى سوريا إلى منطقة معلولا ووجدت فيها الحقل الخصب لتعبدها والتبشير بالرب يسوع، وذاع صيتها في كل المنطقة وانتقلت شهرتها حتى إلى بلاد الغرب، وكانت تسافر بين الحين والآخر إلى بلاد الغرب وخاصة اسبانيا لتبشر بالرب يسوع، فعمدت الكثير منهم وأهدتهم إلى الإيمان بالرب يسوع، وشيدت لها الكنائس الكثيرة باسمها، ودُعيت فتيات كثيرات باسمها لينالن شفاعتها.

عاشت القديسة تقلا /90/ سنة، ورقدت بالرب بأمان في قرية معلولا ودُفنت فيها وبُني بجانب قبرها الذي أصبح مزاراً ومحجاً للجميع ديراً للراهبات يؤمه الآلاف المؤلفة من السياح والزائرين من كل أرجاء الدنيا، وقد دعتها الكنيسة "الأولى في الشهيدات" حيث تعرضت لعذابات شتى، ولأسفار مضنية وقاسية قضت حياتها كلها للتبشير بالإنجيل، وكما ألقت الكنيسة عليها لقب "المعادلة الرسل"، إكراماً وإجلالاً لها.

كانت رحلتها من أنطاكية إلى معلولا شاقة وطويلة، فلا طعام ولا ماء ونوم في العراء مع الحر والبرد، وحيثما حلت كانت تزرع الفرح والسعادة في نفوس سامعيها، إلى أن وصلت إلى بلدة معلولا فلجأت إلى احد الكهوف واختارته مسكناً لها، وما زال موجوداً حتى الآن، وفي رحابه بُني الدير للرهبنة النسائية حاملاً اسمها المقدس، ولم تكتفِ بالتبشير في أنحاء سوريا إنما وصلت في جهاداتها التبشيرية إلى اسبانيا لتي استقبلتها وآمنت بالرب يسوع وبُنيت الكنائس فيها حاملة اسمها، واتخذت الفتيات اسمها شفيعة لهن وتبركاً به.

للقديسة عجائب لا تعد ولا تحصى في تاريخ الدير الذي يعود إلى بطريركية أنطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس، وأرشيف الدير عامر بأخبار هذه المعجزات حتى يومنا هذا.

وكم يحلو للإنسان أن يرى جماهير المؤمنين تحتشد في يوم عيدها المقدس في 24/أيلول من كل عام حيث يتحول الدير إلى مكان للصلاة والابتهاج والفرح، يقدمون فيه للقديسة الابتهالات ولله الشكر الذي انعم عليهم بالسلام والطمأنينة وقد دُعيت القديسة تقلا الأولى في لشهيدات لأنها أول فتاة تؤمن بالرب يسوع وتنال العذاب على أيدي والدها وجلاديها وتنجو منها، وقد رقدت القديسة تقلا بسلام في 24/أيلول عن عمر ناهز التسعين، ودُفنت في نفس الكهف الذي كانت تقيم وتعيش فيه، والذي كان قاعدة الانطلاق لتبشيرها، والذي أصبح مقاماً مقدساً يحج إليه المؤمنون والزائرون من كل حدب وصوب حتى يومنا هذا.

سطعـت فـوق البريـة وزهــى الديــن الصحيــح

لنـداه العـذب أسـرع عاجــلاً جمــع غفيــر

Saint Thekla,
Protomartyr and Equal of the Apostles

September 24

Thekla was born in the city of Iconium. The daughter of wealthy and highly respected parents, she was known for her extraordinary beauty. When she was 18 years old, her parents made plans for her to be engaged to a young man named Thamyris.

It just so happened that during this time, Paul the Apostle and his friend and co-worker, Barnabas, arrived in the city of Iconium (Acts 13:49-14:10). They had just left another town nearby – Antioch of Pisidia – where their teaching upset many of the Jews. Thekla’s mother, Theokleia, refused to let Thekla join the crowds which gathered to hear the Apostle Paul preach. But Thekla found that if she sat near her bedroom window she could hear everything the apostle said. She sat there for three days and three nights listening to Paul preach the word of God. When her mother and her fiancé saw that Thekla was becoming interested in the new Faith, they went to the governor of the city and complained about Paul and his preaching. The governor saw that others were upset also and did not want a riot in the town. So, in order to make the angry citizens of Iconium happy, the
governor had Paul put in prison to wait for a trial. When Thekla heard of Paul’s arrest, she secretly went to the prison, used her golden bracelets to bribe the guard, and was able to go to the apostle’s cell. When she saw St. Paul, she knelt before him and kissed the chains which bound his hands and feet. She remained there for three days listening to his message of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

During this time, Theokleia and Thamyris realized that they hadn’t seen Thekla lately. They asked Thekla’s servant if she knew where she was. The servant said that Thekla had gone to visit an imprisoned stranger. Theokleia and Thamyris knew at once that she must be with the Apostle Paul. They decided to go again to the governor, and this time they demanded that he do something about the Apostle. After the governor criticized Paul for the disturbances he had caused in the city, he had him stoned and thrown out of Iconium. The governor then admonished Thekla for her foolishness and ordered her to return home with her mother and fiancé. When Thekla announced that she had decided not to marry and to dedicate her life to serving Christ, her mother became very angry and asked the governor to threaten Thekla with severe punishment. The governor agreed and said that Thekla was to be burned at the stake unless she gave up her faith in Christ.

Thekla refused to deny her faith in Christ and was taken to the arena for punishment. As she was tied to the stake, she saw a vision of Jesus Christ which gave her strength to face the fiery flames. Then something amazing happened. As the flames came near Thekla, a thunderstorm formed in the sky. A great torrent of rain and hail came down from heaven and put out all the flames. Embarrassed because his plan had failed, the angry governor released Thekla but commanded that she must leave Iconium at once. As soon as she was released from the arena, Thekla went to the edge of the city where she found the Apostle Paul and his companions hidden in a cave. They had been praying for her. She told him of her trial and the miraculous escape from punishment and asked to be baptized. Paul refused to baptize Thekla at that moment and said that her baptism would be special and would be accomplished in God’s own way and in his own time.

Thekla stayed with the Apostle Paul as they departed from Iconium and traveled to the city Antioch in the country of Syria. As they were entering the city, a young nobleman named Alexander saw Thekla. He was startled by how beautiful she was. He rushed forward and immediately tried to flirt with her, but Thekla tried to ignore him. This embarrassed the young Alexander because his friends saw what was going on. So he went to the governor of Antioch and complained that this girl had disgraced him, a nobleman, in public. He demanded that she be punished by death. The governor agreed and ruled that Thekla would have to face the wild beasts in the arena. Thekla was taken and put into the care of a noblewoman named Tryphaena (who also happened to be a relative of Caesar) until it was time for her to be taken to the arena and killed.

When Thekla was taken to the arena, a female lion (lioness) was set free to attack her. But to the astonishment of the crowd, the lioness approached the girl and sat tamely at her feet. A bear was then released, but as it came close to Thekla, the lioness rose up to defend her and killed the bear. A large lion was then released. The lioness again came to Thekla’s aid, killing the lion, but losing its own life as well. Then all the cages were opened, and a large number of wild animals charged at the defenseless Thekla. She made the sign of the cross and prayed for courage. Then she noticed a large tank of water close by. It contained different kinds of animals from the ocean. She climbed into the water and asked Christ to baptize her as she did so. The young man, Alexander, was frustrated to see that the beasts had not hurt Thekla and asked that she be handed over to him for punishment. He tied her to two large bulls in the hopes that they would pull her apart. But when the bulls charged off in opposite directions, the ropes which held Thekla to them were miraculously loosened and she was spared. Seeing that no harm could be done to Thekla, the authorities let her go. She returned to the home of Tryphaena (the woman who had taken care of her before she was sent into the arena) where she remained for eight days. She told Tryphaena all about the Good News of Jesus Christ, and Tryphaena and her entire household became Christians! When Thekla finally left Antioch, Tryphaena gave her a gift of gold and precious jewels.

Thekla journeyed to the city Myra where she rejoined the Apostle Paul. She told him all that had happened, including her amazing baptism and asked him if she could spend the rest of her life serving Christ. Paul gave her his blessing and she departed, leaving with Paul all the gold and jewels that Tryphaena had given her so that he might give them to the poor and needy.

Thekla then traveled again to the country of Syria where she went up into the mountains for a life of prayer and solitude. Saint Thekla continued to live like this until she peacefully fell asleep in Christ at the age of 90. Shortly after her death, a community of nuns went to live in her mountain cell and built a small chapel in which to place her body. This is the Convent of Saint Thekla which still exists today near the village of Ma‘loula, Syria.

Because of her many sufferings for the Faith, the Church calls her a Protomartyr. And because she converted so many people to Christ-ianity she is also know as Equal-to-the-Apostles.

عيد رفع الصليب

بعض أعيادنا جاءت بها أحداث تاريخية. واحد منها هذا العيد المؤسس على حدثين، اولهما اكتشاف القديسة هيلانة ام القديس قسطنطين الكبير خشبة الصليب في اورشليم. اذ ذاك قام الأسقف مكاريوس ورفعه بيديه وبارك الشعب به0 والحدث الثاني ان ملك الفرس (ايران) خسرو غزا اورشليم السنة الـ 614 (قبل دخول العرب) واستولى على صليب السيد وحمله الى عاصمته المدائن حيث بقي 14 عامًا فاستردّه ملك الروم هرقل بعد ان دحر خسرو.

احتفالا بهذين الحدثين جاء العيد وفيه يطوف الكهنة بالصليب موضوعًا على صينية ومحاطًا بالرياحين او بالزهور فيتقدم في نهاية الصلاة السَحَرية المؤمنون ويقبّلون الصليب ويعطيهم الكاهن زهرة ليوحي ان فرح خلاصنا جاء بهذا الصليب. ثم يقام القداس وترتّل في القسم الأول من القداس "خلص يا رب شعبك" وعبارات اخرى تتعلق بصلب السيد.

الإنجيل كما تلاحظون من يوحنا يحتوي على سر الآلام. اما المعاني الروحية التعليمية ففي الرسالة وهي مأخوذة من الرسالة الأولى الى أهل كورنثوس ونستهلها بهذه الكلمات: "ان كلمة الصليب عند الهالكين جهالة (او حماقة). واما عندنا .......نحن المخلصين فهي قوة الله". ويفسر بولس

جدّا الله الباران ، القديسان يواكيم وحنة ،

عاشا عيشة بسيطة مع تكريس صارم . ولعل تواضعهما ارضى الله جدا ، فاختارهما في النهاية من بين الجميع ، ليصيرا الوالدين القديسين لوالدة الاله المباركة ، فصارا تباعا جدّي الفادي القدوس يسوع المسيح ،

كانت شخصية القديسين يواكيم وحنة مثالية ، وتحتذى ، لأن سيرتهما كانت تتجه نحو الامور الروحية لا المادية ، فقد اختارا ان يوزعا ثلث مدخولهما على الهيكل ، والثلث الاخر ، على المساكين والفقراء ، تاركين الباقي لمعيشتهما ، وقد تدبرا ذلك بفرح ، كما ان اقتصادهما في الانفاق سبق ان انبأ عن ولادة مخلصنا الذي سيبدأ حياته في احوال وضيعة جدا محاطا بحيوانات الحقل والرعاة في المزود .

كان يواكيم من سبط يهوذا ، وقد انحدر من الملك داوود ، اما زوجته الورعة حنة فقد ولدت لكاهن معروف جدا من قبيلة لاوي يدعى ناثان ، وكان له ثلاث بنات ( مريم ، زويا ،وحنة ) تزوجت مريم في بيت لحم فصارت ام صالومي ، بينما زويا التي تزوجت في بيت لحم ايضا ، فكانت ام اليصابات والدة القديس يوحنا السابق ،

مسيحيو الشرق والانتفاضات العربية — محمد السماك

يبدو مسيحيو الشرق في حيرة من أمرهم إزاء الانتفاضات الثورية التي تجتاح العالم العربي. وتنطلق هذه الحيرة من أمر بوجهين متكاملين. الوجه الأول هو أن هذه الانتفاضات تثور على بعض الأنظمة الاستبدادية العربية. وأنها تحاول استعادة حقوق الإنسان العربي في الحرية والكرامة والحقوق الإنسانية العامة الأخرى، ومن بينها حق المشاركة في صناعة القرار الوطني.

ويعاني مسيحيو الشرق، كما يعاني مسلموه، من استبداد تلك الأنظمة ومن انتهاكاتها المتمادية لحقوقهم الأساسية، ولذلك فإنهم لا يستطيعون من حيث المبدأ إلا أن يكونوا إلى جانب هذه الانتفاضات الثورية، بل في أساسها. وثمة سوابق تاريخية ثلاث مماثلة: الانتفاضة العربية ضد التتريك، والانتفاضة العربية ضد الاستعمار الأوروبي (الفرنسي والبريطاني)، والانتفاضة العربية ضد الاحتلال الصهيوني.

عيد ميلاد والدة الاله

ان ولادة مريم المباركة والدة الاله الدائمة البتولية ، كانت في بلدة نائية مغمورة تدعى الناصرة ، من اعمال الجليل في الارض المقدسة ، وذلك الحدث المقدس هو خطوة مهمة على الطريق الطويل الذي ادى الى ولادة يسوع المسيح ابن الله ومخلص العالم .

ان اسم مسقط رأس مريم البتول يعني ( مكان ظهور الازهار )، والقدرة العجيبة التي للاسم يمكن ان تشاهد في رواية اختيار العناية الالهية لوالدي ام الله كي يقتبلا هذه الطفلة القديسة .

كانت مريم البتول ابنة للقديسين يواكيم وحنة ، زوجين تقيين كانا يتألمان جدا لعدم قدرتهما على الانجاب حتى وقت لاحق من حياتهما بحسب شواهد كثيرة من تلك الحقبة ، ولما كانت حنة عاقرا ، فقد انتقدت مرارا على انها غير جديرة ببركة الله .

وتعاظم احتقار الزوجين الشيخين ، حتى ان كاهن الهيكل في الناصرة رفض ان يقبل ذبيحة يواكيم في خدمة السبت ! وكان الرفض مدعاة لألم عظيم ، الا ان يواكيم وحنة لم يكفا عن الصلاة رغبة في ان يكون لهما طفل .

وبأشكال شتى فان الازدراء الذي عاناه والدا مريم البتول من قبل اترابهما ، من شأنه أن يصوّر على نحو كامل ، الظروف الوضيعة التي سيولد فيها يسوع المسيح لاحقا

اسمع يا بنى كلامى واحفظه فهذه وصاياى يجب ان تمارسيها ان اثرت ان تكون رابهاً لأنك ان كسلت فى اتمام احدى هذه الوصايا فما اكملت الواجب ، ويكون وعدك كاذباً وآراؤك عن الرهبنة ليست صحيحة ، ومالك الذى وزعته قد أضعته سيدى إذ تصبح طلباتك فارغة لأنك لم تستيقط بقوة ولم تقبل على السيرة الرهبانية باجتهاد ولم تربط وسط قلبك بالكمال ولم تستعد للقتال الشيدد ضد الشياطين الغير منظورين ، كما يقول الرسول بولس: ان قتالنا ليس مع لحم ودم ، بل مع الرؤساء والسلاطين ومع احياء الشر فى عالم الظلمة ومع الارواح الخبيثة.

‫الـصــلاة

الصلاة هي حركة الوصل بين الإنسان والله، ولم تكن الصلاة ذات منفعة بدون المسيح. في الفردوس صلاة آدم الإنسان الأول كانت الطاعة والصوم وكان ينعم بمواهب العدل الاولى. كانت الصلاة مباشرة وغير محتاجة لوسيط. ولكن بعد ان توقف الأول عن الصلاة وعصى أمر الله وكسر صومه وأكل من شجرة وسط الجنة المحرمة عليه، دخل في غيبوبة الأنا والكبرياء.

لم يَثبت الإنسان الأول بالطاعة والصوم والغبطة، بل بدأ يبحث عن حجة يغطي او يبرر بها عصيانه. غروره أنانيته جعلته يدخل بالموت الروحي ويُطرد من الجنة وهكذا هُشمت الصورة التي خُلق عليها.

What do Icons Mean?

The very meaning of the icon has as its foundation the incarnation of Our Lord Jesus Christ. “And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Christ is “the icon of the invisible God” (Col.1:15), and the transfiguration on the mount offers support of this (Matt. 17:1-13). المرض والشفاء في

اللاهوت الأرثوذكسي

كيف يفهم اللاهوتُ الأرثوذكسي وكيف يجب على الكنيسة أن تفهم المرضَ والشفاء، وذلك ليس بمفاهيم إيديولوجية مسيطرة أو مفاهيم نفسية نفعية؟ في محاولتنا لإعطاء إجابة على هذا التساؤل، سنستعير بعض المبادئ الأساسية التالية من اللاهوت الآبائيّ:

1- المرض، بكلّ أنواعه هو نتيجة سقوط الإنسان. هذا يعني أنّ المرض يرتبط مع الخطيئة، وليس مع الطبيعة البشرية. ليس بالأمر الطبيعي إذاً أن يمرض الإنسان، إنما هو أمرٌ مخالفٌ للطبيعة. يبدو هذا للوهلة الأولى أنه سيقودنا إلى ما أسميناه إيديولوجية مسيطرة، في هذه الحالة فإنّ العلاج والشفاء يعنيان التكيّف مع الطبيعة. إنّ طبيعة الإنسان بحدّ ذاتها، بما أنها من العدم، فهي قابلة للتغيّر، أي تميل نحو الفساد والموت، وبالتالي نحو المرض. لكنّ الطبيعة نفسها يمكنها أن تتجاوز هذا الميل، ليس بقوى فطرية داخلها، إنما باتحادها بالإله الأزلي والعادم الفساد. إنّ تجاوز كلّ من هذه النزعة الفطرية في الطبيعة البشرية وهذا الفساد، أُعطي للإنسان كـ “كلمة”، كهدف نهائي يعود تحقيقه إلى حرية الإنسان كشخص. دُعيَ الإنسانُ الأول، كشخصٍ حرّ، ليقود الطبيعة إما باتجاه ذاته أو خارجاً عن ذاته، أي نحو الله. أما الاختيار الحرّ للإنسان الأول، آدم، فقد كان الخيار الأول من بين الاثنين، أي ميل الطبيعة تجاه ذاتها، وهكذا تحوّل المرض من إمكانية طبيعية إلى حقيقة طبيعية. لم يكن ممكناً بعد ......

عيد رقاد والدة الإله

عيد رقاد السيدة هو آخر عيد كبير في السنة الطقسية التي تنتهي في 31آب، ويدشّنها عيد ميلاد العذراء في 8 أيلول. ويرتكز هذا العيد، كباقي الأعياد المريمية (ماعدا البشارة) على معلومات استقتها الكنيسة من التقليد. وقد أُسس هذا العيد في أواخر القرن السادس أو أوائل القرن السابع (بين 610 و 649) بمناسبة الكنيسة التي دشنت في الجسمانية حيث دفنت مريم ووالديها كما جاء في التقليد. ثم انتشر في سائر أنحاء الإمبراطورية البيزنطية. وانتقل إلى الغرب في عهد البابا ثيودورس الأول (647-649).

عظات شهيرة تشهد لهذا العيد، ألقيت في القرن الثامن، وقد ألقاها القديس جرمانوس بطريرك القسطنطينية (توفي 733)، والقديس أندراوس الكريتي (توفي سنة 740) والقديس يوحنا الدمشقي (توفي سنة 753)، (وقد انتقينا مقطعاً من إحداها في مقطع سابق من هذه النشرة)، وغيرهم من الواعظين المشهورين في القرن السابع. وقد استعمل لهذا العيد عدة تسميات منها "عيد رقاد والدة الإله" أو "انتقال" أو "صعود" العذراء.

ولم يذكر الإنجيل شيئاً عن رقاد والدة الإله كما انه لم يسلط لنا الأضواء على تفاصيل حياتها أيضا. إنما ما يذكره القديس يوحنا الدمشقي في أوائل القرن الثامن في عظته الشهيرة حول رقاد السيدة كاف لتثبيت التراث الشفهي الذي شاع في الكنيسة منذ القرون الأولى ونقل إلينا في مخطوطة بعنوان "كتاب يوحنا اللاهوتي حول رقاد والدة الإله الكلية القداسة". وقد وجدت نسخ من هذه المخطوطة باللغات اليونانية والسريانية والعربية، وكلها تعود إلى أوائل القرن الرابع للميلاد. أما القديس الدمشقي الذي اشتهر بكتاباته المريمية، فأكد لنا أن المسيح بنفسه قد حضر إلى مضجع والدته المحاط بالرسل الذين استقدموا بالروح من أقاصي الأرض.

يقول التقليد الشفوي أيضا أن الرسل بعد العنصرة أخذوا يجتمعون معاً بانتظام وإذا اتكئوا للغذاء بعد الصلاة كانوا يتركون ما بينهم موضعاً خالياً ويضعون على الوسادة قطعة من الخبز الذي يأكلونه يدعونها جزء الرب. وإذا نهضوا بعد الغذاء وصلّوا وشكروا يأخذون تلك القطعة فيرفعونها قائلين "المجد لك يا إلهنا المجد لك المجد للأب والابن والروح القدس" وكانوا يرددون المسيح قام لفترة تتراوح بين الفصح والصعود. أما من بعد الصعود فكانوا يهتفون "عظيم أسم الثالوث القدوس أيها الرب المسيح أعنا" وهكذا حتى أفترقوا للكرازة.

ولكي يبقى هذا التقليد حياً هكذا كان يفعل كل من الرسل حيثما وجد، إلى أن اجتمعوا مقبلين بالسحب ليحضروا احتضار السيدة الذي لم يكن في الواقع إلا انتقالاً. أما في اليوم الثالث من دفنها وإذ كان الرسل مجتمعين كعادتهم وفيما هم يرفعون جزء الرب قائلين" عجيب أسم.." توقفوا وانذهلوا ! إذ يا له من عجب مستغرب السماء فُتحت وظهرت العذراء بجسمها الطاهر ملتحفة بسحابة من النور وملائكة ظهروا متسربلين النور محيطين بها في الجو فقالت "السلام لكم افرحوا معي مدى الأيام.." فاندهش الرسل وهتفوا قائلين عوض "أيها الرب يسوع المسيح أعنا" "يا والدة الإله الكلية القداسة أعينينا" حينئذ ذهبوا إلى القبر وإذ لم يجدوا جسدها تيقنوا من حقيقة قيامتها من بين الأموات حية بجسدها نظير أبنها منطلقة إلى السماوات.قد يتخيل البعض أن هذه الرواية خيالية بعيدة عن الحقيقة والموضوعية، ولكن من يقرأ الإنجيل بإيمان ويعجب بآياته لا يستغرب تقليداً كهذا بل هو تتمة منطقية لحياة الكلية القداسة وتتويج طبيعي لحياة طاهرة كحياة مريم التي اتخذها السيد جسداً من جسدها. أليس هو القائل "من آمن بي وإن مات فسيحيا" فكيف بالحري من جسّدت الإيمان بشخصها وحوت بأحشائها سيد العالم وخالقه؟

يوحنا الدمشقي يهتف بلغة الإيمان في عظته الشهيرة حول رقاد مريم:" اليوم تعبر من الأرض إلى السماء تلك السلم التي نزل عليها العلي" (وهنا يشير إلى سلم يعقوب في حلمه كما ورد في(التكوين 10:28-19). هذا القبر أقدس من قدس الأقداس حيث حوى لا الظلال والرموز بل الحقيقة عينها..ارفع نظرك يا شعب الله وشاهد خيمة إله الصباؤوت في الجثمانية وقد حضر الرسل إليها ودفنوا الجسد مبدأ الحياة الذي كان قد حوى أبن الله.."

أيقونة رقاد السيدة أو انتقالها:

أيقونة رقاد السيدة"أيها الرسل اجتمعوا من الأقطار إلى هنا في قرية الجثمانية واضجعوا جسدي وأنت تقبل روحي يا ابني والهي" هذه الترتيلة صورة عن الخطوط العريضة التي اتبعها رسامو الأيقونات لرسم أيقونة الرقاد. هناك أيقونة في دير القديسة كاترينا في صحراء سيناء(25سم x 38سم) رائعة من حيث الفن التصويري، يعود تأليفها إلى القرن الثاني عشر، واضحة جداً في تصميمها الذي لا يتغير في كافة أنحاء البلدان الأرثوذكسية. وكلنا نعلم أن لأيقونات هذا الدير قيمة منفردة، إذ لم تتأثر بموجة الفتك بالأيقونات التي سادت في القرن الثامن. المشهد هو نفسه في كل الأيقونات التي تؤدي معنى الانتقال: العذراء مريم منطرحة على فراش الموت، جسدها منطو أفقياً وكأنه يكاد ينقلب لتوازنه غير الثابت. وهذا يفسر بسبب عدم وجود العمق في فن الأيقونات، كل شيء رسم سطحياً إذ لا وجود لبعد ثالث كما في اللوحات العادية. فجسد مريم منحن عاكف على الناظر بكثير من الرقة. أما المسيح فهو منتصب في وسط الأيقونة، جسده في اكثر الأحيان محاط بهالة بهية من النور الأزلي، يحمل مريم في يديه مقمطة بلفائف كطفل صغير وكأنها تولد في السماء على يدي ولدها وسيدها. من ينظر إلى الأيقونة من بعيد يتراءى له الخطان اللذان يؤلفان مريم ويسوع وكأنهما خطّا صليب السيد: فالصليب منتصب أبداً في حياة الكنيسة. أما الرسل فيحيطون بجسد مريم بشكل نصف دائرة، نلمح بوضوح أربعة منهم: بطرس منحن فوق رأس مريم وعلائم الحزن والتأمل ظاهرة على وجهه، بولس منعكف عند قدميها منذهل، يوحنا التلميذ الحبيب يُقبّل نعشها بحزن عميق، واما اندراوس فهو واقف وراء بطرس. يوجد عدة أساقفة في اللوحة يتميزون لباسهم الكنسي. أما الملائكة فيشتركون بفرح بهذا المشهد الحزين فيضيفون عليه علائم السموات.

أما روسيا في القرون الوسطى عندما كانت مدينة كييف عاصمتها، فكانت تعتبر عيد رقاد السيدة عيداً وطنياً وتضع نفسها تحت شفاعة العذراء مريم وحمايتها إزاء الغزوات الخارجية، ولذلك اشتهر الفن الروسي في أداء لوحات رقاد العذراء كما تميزت مدينة نوفغورود برسّاميها فكان التأليف نيّراً ساطعاً.

معنى العيد:

يوضح لنا الأب جيله في كتابه عن دورة السنة الطقسية أن نشأة هذا العيد غامضة في العالم المسيحي. ففي فلسطين كان يُقام العيد في 15 آب ما قبل القرن السادس. أما في القرن السابع فقد ثبّت الإمبراطور البيزنطي موريس تاريخ 15 آب بطريقة نهائية. انه من أهم الأعياد الكنيسة وتحضّر الكنيسة المؤمنين له بصوم يدوم أربعة عشر يوماً نصلي فيه قانون البراكليسي، أي الابتهال إلى العذراء يومياً. وهو أهم أعياد السيدة. القراءات التي تتلى فيه هي نفسها التي تتلى في ميلاد السيدة ولا تنوه قطعاً عن رقاد السيدة. أما المعنى الروحي للعيد فيتجلى في تراتيل صلاة الغروب والسحرية ولكن في الواقع هناك عدة معان تنبعث من الصلوات المختصة بالرقاد:

المعنى الأول: العيد ليس فقط احتفالا بولادة مريم في السماء كما تشير إليه الأيقونة بل عيد انتقال مريم بالجسد إلى السماء، والنصوص التي تشير إلى ذلك عديدة في طقوسنا "أن والدة الإله لا تغفل في الشفاعات...لم يضبطها قبر ولا موت"..." لانك انتقلت إلى الحياة بما انك أم الحياة"... وبالتالي جسد مريم الكلي الطهر لم يعرف الفساد الناتج عن الموت وتفككه بل انتقل بواسطة الملائكة إلى السماء.

أما الكنيسة فلم تفرض هذا التعليم على المؤمنين كعقيدة، ولكن ضمير الكنيسة الحي عبر الأجيال يعتبر نفي انتقال السيدة إلى السماء كتجديف أكيد. مريم هي تلك المخلوقة المنفردة في النقاوة والطهارة الجليلة في سر صمتها، المتسامية في عمق آلامها، التي تجاوزت حدود الطبيعة وطارت إلى اقرب حد يستطيع أن يصل إليه إنسان، فتعالت عن الملائكة وتألهت بتواضعها. ولذلك مجّدها ابنها بجسدها ونقله إليه. وهكذا تعيد الكنيسة بمريم أول قيامة قبل القيامة العامة.

المعنى الثاني:" الموت صار عربونا للحياة..." العيد هو عيد كل الطبيعة الإنسانية لان بمريم توصلت الجبلة الترابية النتنة إلى هدفها الأسمى وسمح لها بالرجاء... رقاد العذراء يُمثل لنا المجد الذي يمكن أن نصير إليه إذا ما أثمرت النعمة فينا بفعل الروح القدس. ومهما يكن من شأن الحدث التاريخي فالمهم بالنسبة إلينا أن الكنيسة تركز في قراءاتها على المعنى الروحي للحدث وقد اوجزه لنا بولس الرسول في رسالته الأولى إلى أهل كورنثوس: "كما لبسنا صورة الترابي سنلبس صورة السماوي.. إذ نحن أيضا سنتغير"(1كورنثوس49:15و52). لا شك أن لمريم وضعاً خاصاً وامتيازات خاصة ولكن لنا بها شفيعة إذ لم تهملنا برقادها، ممهدة لنا الطريق إلى السماء، واضعة نصب أعيننا إمكانيات الطبيعة الكامنة في طياتها المنتظرة ندى الروح القدس لكي تنفتح وتتدفق حياة القداسة.

لماذا الانتقال؟ للقديس يوحنا الدمشقي:

في الواقع، إنّ هذا المسكن اللائق بالله، والينبوع غير المنقوب بيدٍ الّذي يتدفق منه الماء الغافر الخطايا، والأرض غير المحروثة المثمرة الخبز السماوي، والكرمة التي أعطت خمر الخلود دونما سقاية، وزيتونةَ رحمةِ الآب الدائمة الاخضرار ذات الثمار البهيّة، كان يجب ألا تقاسي اعتقال لجج الأرض لها. بل كما أن الجسد المقدس الطاهر الذي بواسطتها وحّده الكلمة الإلهي بأقنومه قد قام من القبر في اليوم الثالث، هي أيضاً كان يجب أن تُنتزع من اللحد وتنضمَّ الأمُّ إلى ابنها. وكما نزل هو إليها، هكذا هي نفسها محطُّ حبّه كان يجب أن تُنقَلَ إلى "المسكن الأعظم والأكمل" إلى السماء بعينها".

كان يجب أن تأتي لتسكن في مظالّ ابنها، تلك التي قدّمت ملاذاً للكلمة الإلهي في حشاها. وكما قال الرب إنه سيكون في مسكن أبيه الخاصّ (بالضرورة)، هكذا كان يجب أن تسكن الأمّ في بلاط ابنها، "في بيت الرب وفي ديار بيت إلهنا" (مز134: 1، 135: 2). لأنّه إذا كان ها هنا مسكنُ جميع الفرحين" (مز7:78)، فأين ستسكن إذاً من هي علّة الفرح؟

كان يجب أن تحفظ جسدها بلا فساد، وحتّى بعد موتها، تلك التي حفظت بتوليتها كاملةً في الولادة.

كان يجب أن تسكن في المظالّ السماوية تلك التي حملت خالقها طفلاً في حشاها.

كان يجب أن تأتي لتسكن في خدر الزواج السماوي، العروس التي اختارها الآب لنفسه. كان يجب أن تشاهد ابنها جالساً بقرب الآب، من قد شاهدته على الصليب متقبلةً بذلك في قلبها سيف الألم الذي تركها في ولادتها.

كان يجب أن تتسلّم والدة الإله خيرات ابنها وأن تكرّمها كلّ الخليقة كأمّ لله وأَمَةٍ له. فالميراث يمرّ دوماً من الوالدين إلى الأولاد؛ وأما ها هنا، واقتباساً لعبارة أحد الحكماء، فينابيع النهر المقدس ترتقي ثانيةً إلى أصلها، وذلك لأنّ الإبن قد أخضع لوالدته الخليقة بأسرها.

عظة للقدّيس يوحنا الدمشقي

1- “ذكر الصدّيقين تحفّ به المدائح” (أمثال 7:10)، يقول سليمان الجزيل الحكمة، “وعزيز في عينيّ الربّ موت أتقيائه” (مز 15:115)، كما تنبّأ داود جدّ الإله. فإذا ما كانت المدائح تحتفّ بذكر جميع الصدّيقين، فمن لا يقتضي بمدح من هي ينبوع الصلاح وكنز القداسة، لا لزيادتها مجداً، بل لكيما يزداد هو نفسه من المجد الأبدي؟ هيكل الله، مدينة الله، ليست بحاجة البتة إلى تمجيد من جهتنا: فلأجلها نُطق بعبارات مجد، كما يقول لها داود الإلهي: ”بالأمجاد يا مدينة الله يحدَّث عنك” (مز 3:82). كيف نفهم لَعمري “مدينة الله” هذه، التي لا ترى ولا تحدّ والتي تحوي كل الأشياء في يدها (أشع 12:40)، إن لم تكن تلك التي استطاعت وحدها بالحقيقة أن تحوي كلمة الله الفائق الجوهر في عظمته التي لا حدّ لها، بحال تفوق الطبيعة والجوهر؟ تلك التي لأجلها قال الربّ نفسه كلمات مجيدة؟ وأيّ شيء أمجد من تقبّل تصميم الله؟ READ MORE

A COMMENTARY ON

THE DIVINE LITURGY

Introduction

The Divine Liturgy is divided into three parts:
1. The “Proskomidi”, or preparation of the Holy Gifts. (Not visible to the Faithful).
2. The “Liturgy of the Catechumens”, (the students or learners of the faith).
3. The “Liturgy of the Faithful”, (Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist).

The Transfiguration of Christ

The Transfiguration of Christ is recorded in the first three Gospels (Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9: 2-9; Luke 9: 28-36). The fourth does not contain an account of the event, but its author, being one of the three witnesses, is probably referring specifically to it when he says: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth (1:14). The holy Apostle Peter also recalls his (as well as James’ and John’s) presence with the Lord on Mt. Tabor: (we) were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with Him in the holy mount (II Peter 1:16-18).

All three Gospel accounts agree in the details of the event as well as its following the rather crucial conversation between Jesus and the disciples on the road to Caesarea of Philippi. The Lord seems to have wanted to get certain matters of great importance clear in the minds of His followers before He entered into His priestly ministry. 1) In answer to His question, Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am? we have

Peter’s confession: Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16), or thou art the Christ (Mark 8:29), or the Christ of God (Luke 9:20); 2) Jesus then foretells His suffering, death and resurrection; 3) He rebukes Peter for his objection that such things could not happen to Him; 4) He exhorts them to bear the cross if they would be true disciples; and 5) He promises that some of those standing there would not taste of death till they have seen the Son of Man coming in His kingdom (Matthew 16:28), or till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power (Mark 9:1), or till they see the kingdom of God (Luke 9:27).

The narration of the Transfiguration on the mountain comes immediately after the description of the conversation after six days, although Luke says: about eight days after (both expressions were commonly used for "a week later"): Jesus’ acceptance of the name of Christ or Son of God, His final great prophecy, His reminder of what the life in Him will consist of, and His promise concerning the kingdom. These things, then, must be understood as linked to the Transfiguration itself and as a preparation of the disciples for it.

After having declared that Peter’s confession was revealed to him by the heavenly Father (Matthew 16:17), and then having predicted His Passion and Resurrection, the Lord leads the three, (Peter, James and John) to a "high mountain" where His eternal glory is revealed. Thus, the disciples could understand that the suffering and death that He was to undergo was voluntary. "Thou disciples, insofar as they could bear it, beheld thy glory, O Christ our God; so that, when they saw thee crucified, they might remember that thy suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all the world that thou art truly the effulgent Splendor of the Father." (Kontakion of the Feast) However, the instruction of the disciples was only one of the purposes of this manifestation.

It is possible to understand the Lord’s promise "that there were some standing there that would not taste of death, till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom," as being fulfilled precisely in the Transfiguration. In other words, seeing Jesus the Man already glorified, as He will be after the resurrection, and their being able to see Him in His eternal glory, is nothing more than their seeing the Kingdom of God. Jesus’ glorification as the Son of Man, He was yet to pray for just before the crucifixion (John 17:4). This then would be a vision of that glorification by anticipation. Yet, all of God’s acts, His divine counsel, accomplished in the time of this world, are already accomplished timelessly, eternally by Him for whom there is no time. In the dazzling light, in which the very mountain and all the surroundings were altered, there is a glimpse of the transfigured world (cosmos), when God will be all in all, when the Kingdom is finally established.

The initial presence of Moses and Elias, to whom God had revealed his glory, testifies to the continuity of the mighty work of God and to the fact that the Son participated in those Old Covenant revelations. Moses and Elias then disappear and the uniqueness of Jesus, who had apparently been more or less equal to them in the eyes of the disciples, is now evident. Further, we hear the voice of the Father that came out of the cloud: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him (Matthew 17:5). This voice was the Father’s response to Peter’s enthusiastic suggestion that they make three tabernacles, one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elias.

The disciples fell on their faces, for they could not bear, as created beings, the vision of glory. Only when Jesus touched them and told them to arise and not be afraid, were they able to return to the reality they knew. Our own credal statement, "Light of Light," with reference to the Son is testimony to our faith that God is light and that the Son is also light, and is related to this vision as the eternal, uncreated light on Mt. Tabor.

The same declaration of the Father concerning Christ’s eternal Sonship had been heard at the very beginning of His public work, at His baptism. It was at that time that the Holy Spirit descended upon Him (Luke 3:22), and He began His prophetic ministry, that is, His mission to preach the Kingdom of God and to declare the will of God for mankind. Now, when this voice is heard a second time, a cloud overshadows Him (the cloud was frequently the image of God’s glory and the symbol of the Holy Spirit’s descent in the Old Testament – Exodus 19:9; Leviticus 16:2; II Chronicles 5:13, etc.). It is then, at this point, that the prophetic ministry gives way to Christ’s priestly ministry. The Transfiguration is not only another revelation of the Holy Trinity, but also another anointing for Christ’s work, this time for the sacrifice, in which Jesus would be not only the priest who sacrifices, but the victim who is sacrificed.

"O thou who before the ages art God the Word, O thou who art clothed with light as with a garment, thou wast transfigured before thy disciples, O Master, and didst shine forth more radiantly than the sun. Verily, Moses and Elias did stand before thee, clearly showing that thou art the Lord of the quick and the dead, glorifying thine ineffable providence, thy mercy, and thy great condescension wherewith thou didst save the lost." تجلي الرب يسوع

17: 1-9 -النص:

:الشرح

مُنِح التلاميذُ الثلاثة نعمة معاينة الرب يسوع مكتنفا بالمجد الالهي، فعاينوه بكامل كيانه، بجسده المفعم بالالوهة، لكي يعلموا انه إله متجسد. هذا اختبار مسبق لحضور الملكوت، به اتضحت للتلاميذ معالمه وعلموا ان الملكوت انخطاف الى وجه يسوع الوضاء بالنور الأزلي اللامخلوق.

نص الانجيل مرتبط ارتباطا وثيقا بما قبله اذ ان حقائق ثلاثا تقود اليه يتفق على ذكرها متى ومرقس ولوقا. بطرس يعلن ان الرب يسوع هو "المسيح ابن الله الحي" (متى 16: 16، مرقس 8: 29، لوقا 9: 20)، الرب يسوع يخبر عن آلام ابن البشر وموته وقيامته (متى 16: 21، مرقس 8: 31، لوقا 9: 22) ويعلن نفسه دياناً عندما "يأتي في مجد أبيه مع ملائكته" (متى 16: 27، مرقس 8: 38، لوقا 9: 26). هذه الحقائق الثلاث هي محور النص الانجيلي اذ تؤلف مضمون الاعلان الالهي في التجلي.

"بعد ستة أيام أخذ يسوع بطرس ويعقوب ويوحنا أخاه وأصعدهم الى جبل عالٍ على انفراد". الاسلوب والتعابير تقودنا الى العهد القديم (خروج 24-25) وبالتحديد الى اعتلان الرب لموسى في جبل سيناء وإعطائه الشريعة، "فبعد ان حلّ مجد الرب على جبل سيناء وغطاه الغمام ستة أيام دعا الرب موسى من جوف الغمام في اليوم السابع" (خروج 24: 15-16). اذاً نحن مجددا امام اعلان الهي حاسم، والشهود هم بطرس ويعقوب ويوحنا. هؤلاء شهدوا على مراحل بشارة الرب يسوع وبالأخص الحاسمة منها وبالتحديد المعاناة في الجسمانية التي تكمل التجلي (متى :36-46). في التجلي عرف التلاميذ الربَّ يسوع إلهاً تاماً اذ عاينوه متجلياً بطبيعته الالهية، اما في الجسمانية فعرفوه انساناً تاماً اذ عاينوه ملتحفاً بالضعف البشري. الحدثان يعبران عن حقيقة واحدة وهي الرب يسوع هو إله تام وانسان تام.

"تجلّى قدامهم وأضاء وجهه كالشمس وصارت ثيابه بيضاء كالنور". لم يتبدّل الرب يسوع أمام التلاميذ بل التلاميذ تبدلوا إذ مُنحوا بصيرة روحية أهّلتهم ان يعاينوا الرب يسوع على حقيقته. التلاميذ عاينوا مجد طبيعة الرب الالهية المحمول اليهم بالنور الالهي غير المخلوق. هذا النور اصيل في كيان الرب يسوع المتجسد ولكنه حُجب عن البشر بسبب ضعفهم الى ان تمجّد الرب على الصليب وافتدى البشر فصار بإمكان الانسان ان يعاين المجد الالهي. هذا يصير بعد مرحلة تطهُّر تفترض ايماناً ثابتاً بالحقائق الثلاث السابق ذكرها وتتطلب التزاماً صارماً بما قاله الرب يسوع قبل التجلي "من اراد ان يأتي ورائي فلينكر نفسه ويحمل صليبه ويتبعني..." (متى 16: 24-26).

"واذا موسى وايليا تراءيا لهم يخاطبانه". موسى يمثل الناموس أو شريعة الله، وايليا يمثل الانبياء. بتوجههم إلى الرب يسوع يتضح ان الرب يتمم في شخصه الشريعة والانبياء وذلك بالفداء الصائر بالآلام والموت والقيامة، وهذا يوضحه الانجيلي لوقا اذ يقول ان موسى وايليا "تكلما عن خروجه الذي كان عتيداً ان يكمّله في اورشليم" (لوقا 9: 31).

"حسن ان نكون ههنا". بطرس يتكلم تحت تأثير النشوة باختبار الملكوت ويقول "ان شئت فلنصنع ههنا ثلاث مظال ...". بطرس يريد ان يستقر في هذه الحال ويتذكر المظلة او خيمة الشهادة التي كانت التعبير عن سكنى الله في وسط شعبه والمكان الذي منه يخاطب الشعب. موسى بنى الخيمة بأمر الله (خروج 25: 8 الخ) وعندما فرغ من بنائها "غطت السحابة خيمة الاجتماع وملأ بهاء الرب المسكن" (خروج 40: 34). وها هو الرب مجددا يحضر بنفسه ويخاطبهم من السحابة ليعلن الحقيقة الساطعة "هذا هو ابني الحبيب الذي به سررت فله اسمعوا".

ها هو الآب يؤكد الحقائق الثلاث التي سبق ذكرها. الرب يسوع هو الابن يصنع مسرة الآب إذ "يطيع حتى الموت موت الصليب" (فيليبي 2: 8) كما سبق ان أنبأ اشعيا القائل "اما الرب فسُرّ بأن يسحقه بالحزن إن جعل نفسه ذبيحة إثم ... ومسرة الرب بيده تنجح" (اشعيا 53: 10)، وبذلك صار ديانا بكلمته كما سبق ان "قال موسى للآباء: ان نبيا مثلي سيقيم لكم الرب إلهكم من اخوتكم له تسمعون في كل ما يكلمكم به، ويكون ان كل نفس لا تسمع لذلك النبي تُباد من الشعب" (أعمال 3: 22-23، انظر تثنية 18 :15-19). هذا الاعلان الالهي يتحقق على الصليب حيث يتم التدبير الالهي المُعلَن في الناموس والأنبياء.

"فلما سمع التلاميذ سقطوا على أوجههم وخافوا". الخوف يأتي نتيجة لقاء الله، هو ردة الفعل الاولي تجاه الاعلان الالهي (انظر اشعيا 6: 5). الخوف أخرج الرسل من خبرة التجلي فعادوا ووجدوا انفسهم على الارض بعد ان ارتفعوا بالمعاينة الى الملكوت.

"لا تُعلموا أحدا بالرؤيا حتى يقوم ابن البشر من بين الأموات". نرنم في عيد التجلي قائلين "عندما يعاينوك (التلاميذ) مصلوبا، يفطنوا ان آلامك طوعاً باختيارك ويكرزوا للعالم انك انت بالحقيقة شعاع الآب" (قنداق العيد). ذلك لأن بالصليب يتم كل شيء، تصير مسرّة الآب ويدخل الابن الوحيد مجده، فيصير التجلي في متناول المؤمن. بالقيامة يصبح التجلي حقيقة معاشة للمؤمن المُتَطهر بكلمة الرب يسوع المعلن منذ تلك اللحظة بمجده الالهي المفعم بالنور اللامخلوق.

هل الخوف نعمة أو نقمة؟

كي يتسنى لنا التأمل في هذا الموضوع علينا أن نطرح بعضاً من الأسئلة التي ربما تفيدنا في حياتنا: ما هو الخوف؟ وكيف نتخلص منه؟.. وما هو الفرق بين الخوف والمخافة؟ وهل هناك ما يسمى خوف إيجابي وخوف سلبي؟ أو بمعنى أخر: هل من خوف نافع وخوف ضار؟.. وهل هو مرض أم تقوى؟.. نعمة أم نقمة؟ هل هناك مواعيد من الله تطمئنا عند خوفنا؟.. كثيرةٌ هي الأسئلة والأفكار التي تجول في خاطري وخاطر البعض منكم حول موضوع الخوف. وأريد أن أطمئنكم كما أطمئن ذاتي بما قاله المرنم في المزمور “الرب نوري وخلاصي فممن أخاف؟” (مز4:23).

The Art and Science of Prayer (from Letter 15)

You write that you prayed fervently and at once you were calmed, receiving an inner assurance that you would be released from oppression; and then, indeed, it was so....
Recall how you prayed and always strive to pray this way, so that prayer comes from the heart and is not just thought by the mind and chattered by the tongue.
I won't conceal the fact that, though once you prayed from the heart, it is hardly possible to pray that way constantly. Such prayer is given by God or is inspired by your Guardian Angel. It comes and goes. It does not follow, though, that we should give up the labor of prayer. Prayer of the heart comes when one makes an effort; to those who do not strive, it will not come. We see that the Holy Fathers made extraordinary efforts in prayer, and by their struggles they kindled the warm spirit of prayer. How they came to this prayerful state is illustrated in the writings they have left us. Everything they say about striving in prayer makes up the science of prayer, which is the science of sciences. The time will come when we will study this art [see the classic work The Art of Prayer (Faber & Faber)—webmaster]. But now, since it came up in our correspondence, I touch on it only in passing. Let me add: There is nothing more important than prayer; therefore, our greatest attention and most diligent attention must attend it. Grant us, O Lord, zeal for such an effort!

صوم السيدة العذراء هو من الاصوام المهمة والمحبوبة لدى فئة كبيرة من المسيحيين الممارسين مسيحيتهم ويكاد يقال أن لشعب المؤمن هو الذي وضعه وفرضه على روزنامة الكنيسة لانه حتى القرن الحادي عشر لم يكن ضمن الاصوام المعمول بها بحكم القانون الكنسي ، كما لا نجده في أي قانون من قوانين الصوم وكان هذا الصوم معروفا بالصوم العذراى ويعتبرونه كسند للطهارة والتبتل لهذا اكثر ما يصومه هم المتنسكون والرهبان وهكذا بات الشعب يمارسه على كافة المستويات جاعلا منه مناسبة للتجديد الحياة الروحية وفرصة للتوبة وجعل مريم العذراء من هذا الصوم ليس المثل الحي للطهارة والتبتل بل الشفيع المؤتمن لنوال القوة والنعمة من الله لسلوك هذه الحياة 0

The Fast of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos

For the first fourteen days of August during each year, the Holy Orthodox Church enters into a strict fast period in honor of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary. The eminent Orthodox theologian, Father Sergei Bulgakov, beautifully expresses the high regard which the Orthodox Christians have for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, for her special role in the salvation of mankind, when he affirms, “The warm veneration of the Theotokos is the soul of Orthodox Piety.” St. John of Damascus, one of the great Orthodox fathers, pointed out that when the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Mother of God and gave birth to Christ, the Redeemer of Mankind, she became the mother of mankind. We call the Virgin Mary “Theotokos”, from the Greek, which means “The Birth-Giver or the Bearer of God.” This is the highest title that can be bestowed upon any member of the human race.

The Theotokos, the Virgin Mary, was “blessed amongst women,” and she was chosen “to bear the Savior of our souls.” We, therefore, as Orthodox Christians, consider her to be the Queen of all the saints and the angels.

Knowing that she holds such a high place in the Kingdom of Heaven and that she is eternally present at the throne of God interceding for mankind, we, as good Orthodox Christians, must pray for her love, guidance, and READ MORE

FEASTDAYS AND SERVICES TO THE THEOTOKOS

Ever since the Archangel Gabriel first said, "you are blessed among women," to the Virgin Mary, these words of praise have inspired the faithful of the Christian Church. Their love for Christ, and desire to honor all that He honored has led them to also praise His glorious Mother. Thus they continue to fulfill the words of the Holy Spirit spoken through her, "behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed" (Lk. 1:45). The Church has honored the Most Holy Lady in many ways. Theologians have defended her doctrinally and theologically. Authors have composed hymns dedicated to her. The faithful have sought her intercession in their prayers. Finally, the entire Church has celebrated feast days commemorating certain events in her life or miracles performed through her mediation. After the Council of Ephesus (431 AD), however, the number of hymns and services to the Theotokos increased and flourished. All feast days seem to have their historical foundations during or after this great Council, which defended the doctrine of the Person of Christ and the dignity of the Mother of God.
During and after the establishment of the feast days of the Theotokos clergy and laity emphasized her praise through hymns written in her honor. The most famous work of this kind is the Akathist Hymn, a Kontakion written by the 6th century deacon, St. Romanos the Melodist. The Paraclesis is another poetic work dealing with another aspect of veneration of the Virgin, her role as Protectress of Christians. The Candles and Their Symbolism

Lit candles and Icon lamps (lampadas) have a special symbolic meaning in the Christian Church, and no Christian service can be held without them. In the Old Testament, when the first temple of God was built on earth the Tabernacle services were held in it with lamps as the Lord Himself had ordained (Ex. 40:5, 25). Following the example of the Old Testament Church, the lighting of candles and of lampadas was without fail included in the New Testament Church's services.

The Acts of the Apostles mentions the lighting of lamps during the services in the time of the Apostles. Thus, in Troas, where Christ's followers used to gather on the first day of the week (Sunday) to break bread, that is, to celebrate the Eucharist, there were many lights in the upper chamber (Acts 20:8). This reference to the large number of lamps signifies that they were not used simply for lighting, but for their spiritual significance. READ MORE

My task this evening is to address the topic of the Role of the Theotokos in the Orthodox Church. This is not easy, especially in so short a time. We have two thousand years of Church History and two thousand years of the Theotokos’ involvement in that Church History. I certainly am not going to say it all in a few minutes.

Great Lent brings a major change in our lives. First of all we should be fasting. Christ made it quite clear that we should befasting when He instructed the disciples “when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward. Thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face; that thou be not seen of men to fast, but of thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall recompense thee.”

In addition we are expected to increase our alms-giving, because of the decrease in spending on foods and luxuries. Thus we bring our passions under control through our fasting and we help those who may not have even the barest minimum of food.

There is also a major change in the way we worship and pray. We celebrate the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great on Sundays instead of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. We have the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts on Wednesdays and Fridays, and Great Compline on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. All these services take on a penitential character which is especially reflected in the use of

1. ADVENT -It is of Latin origin, meaning `coming or `arrival, and is used in reference to the coming of Christ at the time of and preparation for His Nativity.

3. AKATHISTOS -A Greek word meaning `not permitted to sit’. It is a long hymn composed for devotional purposes to many different saints. The Akathistos for the Theotokos is used during Lent.

It happened near theSea of Galilee, on a mild summer afternoon when Our Lord was busy healing the sick and preaching the Holy Gospel.
It happened when a woman of great faith detached herself from the crowd of onlookers who were following Christ and dared to approach him. Her name was Veronica, and she was struggling with a chronic health problem in which she hemorrhaged continually, leaving her weak and anemic and constantly ill. Hoping for relief from this life-threatening ailment, she was content to approach the Lord silently and merely touch the hem of his robe.

منذ الصغر ترافقنا الأيقونات في كل جهة من الكنيسة، وخاصةً على الأيقونستاس. وكنائسنا هي نوع من الاحتفال، بالشكل واللون، لحضور الله في كنيسته. كما أن للأيقونة مكانتها وتوقيرها في البيت المؤمن، إذ توضع عادةً في إحدى الزوايا، فيتوجّه الجميع إليها بالصلاة. ولكي نفهم معنى استخدام الأيقونة في كنيستنا الأرثوذكسية، لا بد من رؤيتها فناً ليتورجيا نستعملها في إطار العبادة الأرثوذكسية ونكرمها. ليست إذاً فناً دينياً نزيّن به الجدران ونتأملّه كأي معرض فني.

الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية ترى العذراء مريم الم التي حملت لها ” للكنيسة ” ولكل البشرية الإله “الكلمة المتجسد”، الذي جاء إلى العالم لينقله من ظلام الخطيئة إلى نور الحياة الأبدية أي الحياة مع الله؛ هذا الحدث جعل الكنيسة منذ نشأتها حتى الآن تكرّم العذراء مريم أعظم تكريم، تكريم يفوق الملائكة “……. هي أكرم من الشيروبيم وأرفع مجداً بغير قياس من السيرافيم….”، هذا مستمد من تكريم السيد المسيح الذي ارتضى أن يحلّ في أحشائها و أن يأخذ منها جسده المقدّس، جاعلاً إيّاها “والدة الإله، وأم النور”. لقد استطاع الابن من الاتحاد بالخليقة كلها بواسطة العذراء، وبذلك صارت العذراء سماءً جديدةً أرحب من السماء التي تحوي الشمس و القمر و النجوم لأن الرب يسوع هو نفسه أشرق من هذه السماء.

قالَ أحدُ رؤساءِ الكهنةِ المعاصرينَ الكثيريِ الحكمةِ، القولَ التالي إنَّها لَشجاعةٌ جدًّا أنْ توجدَ: "وتعيشَ بقربِ أَحدِ القدِّيسين فهذا يتطلَّبُ تواضعًا وصلاةً دؤوبة". أنا أوافقُهُ الرأيَ بالمطلق، ولكنْ، لأيِّ سبب؟ القدِّيسُ يكونُ في حالةٍ ساميةٍ مقابلَ الذي لايزالُ بعدُ مجاهدًا، ويحاولُ الاقترابَ من خطوطِ التَّماسِ مع الله. فالقدِّيسُ قدِ امتلَكَ فكرَ المسيحِ ويقودُهُ الروحُ القدس. وبالتالي،يظهرُ، مرَّاتٍ كثيرة، بحالةٍ يصعبُ فهمُها، في كيفيَّةِ تفكيرِه وكيفيَّةِ عملِه. بالطبع، هو ليسَ متحرِّرًا من الأهواءِ المعروفةِالمشتركة، من حاجتِهِ إلى النوم، والطعام، والأحاسيسِ الجسديَّة. ولا يتزيَّنُ أيضًا بمواهبِ اللهِ جميعِها، طالما أنَّه، بحسبِخاصِّيَّةِ الطبيعةِ البشريَّة، يقبَلُ ملءَ المواهبِ الخاصَّة، كما يُحلِّلُ القدِّيسُ البارُّ مكسيموس المعترف بعمقٍ وبرؤيةٍ ثاقبة. ولكنَّالقدِّيسَ يختلفُ عمَّن ليسَ قدِّيسًا في مواجهتِهِ للأهواءِ الطبيعيَّةِ المشتركة. وهذه المواجهةُ تكونُ دائمًا حسبَ مشيئةِ اللهِ وتعملُعلى مستوى الروح.

3- عندما يجتمع الناس للصلاة فلا تخاصم أو تجادل أحداً بل ثابر على القراءة والصلاة الى ان يحين وقت إتمام السر الإلهي، عندئذٍ انتصب بخشوع وورع وبقلب طاهر أمام المذبح المقدس، غير ملتفتٍ إلى هنا أو هناك بل ماثلاً بخشيةٍ ورعدةٍ أمام الملك السماوي.
4- إياك أن تحذف شيئاً من الصلوات أو تختصر منها لأجل مصلحة عالمية أو مراعاة لبعض الكـسالى المتوانين، أو لأجل المحاباة واسترضاء بعض الناس.

The Formulation of the Church’s Stand
Throughout its history, the Orthodox Church has dealt with controversial issues by a process which addresses the “mind of the Church.” When an issue arises for which there is no clear-cut, widely and readily acknowledged tradition, and about which there is honest divergence of opinion as to what view genuinely expresses the teaching of the Church, a process begins which may eventually lead to the formulation of an official Church teaching. A classical example from the early period of the Church is the formulation of the Church doctrines about the person of Jesus Christ, which began with the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea (325) and concluded with the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787).

كلمة بقايا باللغة اليونانية وباللغة اللاتينية الكلاسيكية RELIQUIAE، في الأصل تعني أن أي شيء من بقايا الأموات، ولكنها مع الوقت أخذت معنى دينيًا إذ خصصت الكنيسة هذه اللفظة لبقايا القديسين وما يختص بهم: كالأجساد والأدوات التي استعملها القديس خلال حياته الأرضية وكل ما تبقى من الأدوات التي تألم بها وأدّت إلى استشهاده.
